The RIL is the power player in the equation. Moto codes a better interface between the processor and antenna. They started coding this 10yrs before anyone else.
Samsung should copy it so they can be sued by Motorola

For the third time. You cant dial *228 directly!!! Make a new contact. Call it prl update or whatever your heart desires. Make *228 the contacts number. Save the contact. Now go to the contact you named, and call it. Voila!! Keep it up and i am going to have to post a video of my nexus doin the update. Ive noted my prl before and after doing this, and it always goes to a higher number.
Except that now I'm not getting a 4G connection, only 3G. Why would that be? When I go to Settings>More Settings>Mobile Networks>Access Point Names, the second entry in the list "LTE Verizon - Internet" was selected, now the first one "EHRPD - Verizon Internet" is selected. When I try to manually select the LTE one, it simply reverts back to the first one.
Any thoughts?
So I am not getting as good reception on my GS3 as on my Droid X2, so I tried this out. I made a contact with *228 and dialed. I did indeed update my PRL, and the number went to 52823 from something lower. My signal strength went from around 105 to 95.

Potentially... but the ATT GS3 uses the same SoC as the VZW GS3 and has a wifi toggle.
Just released: New Incredible 4G based on S4 SOC also ditches the WiFi toggle and adds the same custom notification as on the GS3. Yo Verizon, What’s With This Ongoing Wi-Fi Toggle Notification on the Galaxy S3 and Incredible 4G? – Droid Life
Coincidence?
What is the problem? Can't you disable wifi functions in advanced settings?
I leave wifi off unless no choice but wifi.

Everything I read from Verizon from when I had my gnex was don't ever try to use *228 with there 4g phones...could cause major issues
Try pulling the battery for 1 minute also try *22899 I'm curious if that works
Can you not just leave wifi on? does it drain the battery or something? I leave it on all the time on my 4s and was planing to do this with my s3.
Sorry if this has been answered maybe in another post but I did a brief search and did not see the answer?
Thanks.
Yep.
I pulled the battery and SIM card, and it didn't help.
I also tried *22899, and it didn't work.
What next?
WiFi can be a tremendous drain on the battery. It requires a lot more power than let's say bluetooth due to the broadcast range.
Unfortunatly... you probably need to go to VZW and get a new sim.
