Help no multitouch ever in X10??

I've never used a multitouch device before for more than 5 mins, apart from "pinch to zoom" which I can happily live without, what other useful benefits does multitouch give you? In all the years I've owned PDAs and other touch devices I have to say I've never felt "limited" by not being able to poke the screen with more than one finger at a time.

As a long time macbook pro user I've grown accustomed to using gestures, so when I use my mac pro or my linux-laptop I miss the pinchzoom and rotate gestures and therefor imagine I'll miss it on a smartphone. Plus multitouch is useful for typing (shift+letter etc) and a very nice addition as a input device in applications and/or games.

Ah right sounds like I'll be able to do without it then. I've never been able to get used to gestures on anything while browser controls etc are so easily accessible and i much prefer double tap zoom to pinch zoom for easy one handed operation. As for shift+letter I'm assuming the keyboard will have single letter shift lock ala the xbox chatpad.

Still looking forward to the phone though lol.:D

Pinch-zoom is the most common gesture people are familiar with. But a potential lack of dual-touch support in the X10's hardware would have a significant effect on game support, since the X10 lacks any game-useful hardware buttons or alternative input method. Keyboard response is also benefited by dual-touch support.

With that said, we have still yet to get a solid answer from SE, so here's hoping this is all a communications breakdown rather than an actual issue.

Xperia X10 multitouch issue hardware-related? -- Engadget

If this is utterly true, I'd have to admit it'll be a htc desire for me. And I was about to push order before I saw this.

The Xperia X10 has a capacitive screen. so multi-touch is possible on these types of screens.. just wait for 2.1. if you look at how Capacitive screens work, you would know that multi touch is just a software issue.. when someone puts a 2nd finger on the screen it is always picked up just at lower input levels.. then the software has to map this.

Same thing with the HTC magic. people said multi-touch would not work and well it did if your rooted your phone and upgraded your rom. or when rogers did the update.. there was Multi-touch.. same capacitive screen technology.

Yup, it's official. No multi-touch in any form on the X10. Ever. The hardware won't support it.

This is an amazingly short-sighted decision on Sony's part, and to not say anything about it until now is unforgivable. Really, who releases single-touch hardware in the mid-range these days, let alone as a flagship product.

I was so excited when I heard about the X10 almost half a year ago (around the time the N1 was announced) and the X10 was what got me really interested in Android. I fell in love with the form factor of the X10 (I still say that the X10 is the most beautiful phone on the market) and what I learnt about the Android OS made it that more appealing. Then the excitement started to wane with hearing that the OS only runs on Android 1.6 and then the looooong delay release . Although SE says that the update is coming *soon* (after the release date), I wonder if maybe it'll take them another 1/2 year to get the OS to run 2.1  and by then Google would have released a new OS (Gingerbread anyone?). And now rumours are going around that the hardware and software do not support multi touch...not even dual touch...ouch well hopefully the rumour mill is wrong on this. But for charging a premium price on the phone

I am fine with tap zoom too, but in this day and age MT is not on only used to zoom, it has a while range of applications relating to several software and the fact that there is no physical keyboard or tracking ball should make the MT/DT almost imperative.

I really feel SE dropped the ball here

That's exactly it. Everyone talks about pinch-to-zoom, but really that's a very minor use of MT/DT that can be worked around quite easily (the touch-hold to zoom that SE is working on looks like a good alternative).

The real issue lies in the fact that lack of MT/DT puts the X10 without features that are common on most Android handsets. That means those are features that developers will develop their software around. When that happens (already happening with games more and more), users of the X10 will be left without the capability to properly interact with that software.

It's absolutely inexcusable in a flagship phone these days no to have MT/DT.
