Question about Google Chat SMS on mobile

Anyone know if there is a way to have the google chat SMS feature on a smart phone? My Galaxy S3 has the "google talk" feature and there is no option to send an SMS like there is when I access gmail from my computer. Is there an app or some kind of trick I can use to get the same SMS capabilities on my smart phone as well? I was able to use google chat SMS to avoid paying for international texting. I was hoping I could continue this strategy with my smart phone. Unfortunately, I can't find the same feature on mobile.

I can't submit links or images as a first time user so I will do my best to describe what I mean. Notice how when you click on a contact in gmail and open up a chat tab, there is a dropdown menu and you can select "send text (SMS)"? That feature is not present on mobile. Can I get that feature somehow?

edit: ok never mind.. I guess the attachment did work. Please refer to the image to see what I am talking about exactly.

ahhh skype? google voice can send sms but not internationally.

I have the Skype app and it doesn't allow me to send texts if the contact is offline. The issue here is that the person I am trying to stay in touch with rarely has internet access so she can't be on skype and receive messages from me. Google chat SMS has been really convenient because I can send texts directly to her basic non-smart phone and avoid international texting charges.

edit: I have tried gvoice mobile app SMS as well. You are correct. It doesn't allow you to send international texts.

tell her to add the number to her skype account on the computer and you should be able to send message on her non-smart phone anyway

Thank you for the skype idea. I added her phone # as a phone contact (not a skype contact) on skype. I am going to try to send her an international text. It isn't free (9 cents a txt) but it sure beats the 25 cents a text I would get charged if I had sent it directly through my phone.

Not sure if it works Internationally but you might want to take a look at GroupMe (which is from Skype actually). It is an app to do group chats across mobile devices. There is an Android app for it but it also seamlessly works across SMS so feature phones can participate. Basically it works like this:

1) You will install the app
2) Through it you set up a Group and add your friends number to it
3) You send a message to the group and your friend will receive it as a text message. Long as your friend replies to the number associated to that number it will be sent to you (and anyone else in the group).

You can then continue to message through the group using either the app or sms (it will even switch when your in data poor area).

The other option is you can log into GMail using the browser and select the option to go to the full site, then you should have the same options. A bit of a pain if you ask me but doable.
