Q on returning Eris to get the Incredible later

My girlfriend bought an Eris on 4/2. She wants to get the Incredible now. She called VZW and was told two different things. One rep told her she only has until 5/2 to return it and get a new phone even if she switches over to an old phone until the phone she wants is available. Another rep told her if she returns the Eris and switches over to an old phone she will be eligible for an upgrade whenever the unreleased phone is available even after 5/2.

My other idea is for her to switch to a prepaid account until it is released.

Thanks for any help.

Its the latter of the 2, if she returns the phone she can wait as long as she wants to pick a new one using her upgrade.

I believe if you return it within the 30 days and want to get a new phone that you haven't had before, you either pay a $35 restocking fee, or you go back to your old phone (or no phone) and after 3 days you can get the new one without paying a restocking fee.

As mentioned, a return resets whatever contract status you have back to the way it was before you bought the new phone. Upgrades, if used on the phone you just returned, are given back to you. Don't think it matters if you're a new/existing customer, either.

Thanks for all the help. The only thing I forgot to mention is she is a new customer. She ported her number from T-mobile. Does that matter as far as being able to return it and putting an old phone on the line until the Incredible is released?

I don't think it should matter at all, as long as you have a Verizon-compatible phone to activate temporarily. Nothing prevents you from getting your own phone and subscribing on a month-to-month basis even as a new customer. The 2-year contract is simply for the subsidized price of a new phone.

That is why (besides instant rebates) that I will allways buy my phones thru Best Buy. F (forget) Verizon...

Back in December, I bought a Droid, snap on case, and screen protectors from VZW store. Had the phone for 30 days right up till final day that I could return it. They took everything back, no hassles, no restocking fee, nothing. I guess it depends on the rep that you're dealing with. And they said everything would go back to the way it was before (i.e. as if I'd never bought the Droid). I was impressed.

I agree with the above posters saying you have 30 days, and your contract will revert back. I was told the same thing by about 3 or 4 different CS Reps.

One of the few things that I am consistently happy with re: Verizon is their Customer Service. I've explained on numerous phone calls (when I was debating on getting a droid) that I was thinking of changing providers (to an I-phone) and that I needed my questions answered. Then I called again with the devour came out. I got an ADDITIONAL $50.00 credit for when I renew my contract, and they always took their time, and verified I had all my questions answered before I got off the phone. They also basically told me how to "work their own system" how I could use the upgrades on my Family plan, if I wanted to get another Verizon phone this summer. Also they offered my New every two discount credit early, (2 months) which I was shocked by. Now granted, I was very direct in explaining I was perfectly fine with going to ATT to get a more desirable phone, so they seemed actually "worried" they might lose me.

I WILL SAY. That the manager of my verizon store here, would not honor my credit given to me, nor would they let me use the "early" New every two credit. I could only do that over the phone, and honestly I was really put off how the IN STORE manager treated me. But their Customer Service over the phone is phenomenal, IMO.
