HTC Hero ROM update on Orange now available

Still looking into which phone to buy myself, but I just found this on my travels:

ROM Upgrade for HTC Hero (Orange)

Obviously, I can't try it myself, but it would seem Orange users can now upgrade in a more... official manner (thanks to Centaur291173 over on the XDA forums for actually posting about it).

Ah, sorry to hear that.

I'm afraid, like I said, I'm not able to test it personally. I can only recommend getting in touch with HTC/Orange about that, I guess it's possible HTC don't have a proper set of Orange serials...

EDIT: Or, it's possible it just plain doesn't work, in which case sorry for getting everyone's hopes up .

Well, the Modaco thread which has all the shipping and generic ROMs on it (i.e. not the custom ones) only has the 1.76.x ROM for Orange at present, but things might change.

It's likely that it will be added to the ROM 'library' in the near future.

the serial has dashes in it yes?

If your Serial number doesnt work its because you have not registered it on HTC's website. go to HTC - Touch Phone, PDA Phone, Smartphone, Mobile Computer: HTC e-Club

either log in or open an account, then just stick your serial number in the box provided, then when you go back to the download new ROM for Orange and put your serial number in the box again you will find it will now work.

Wondered that myself, but haven't had time to check Orange's web site yet. Nope, just looked and not a peep. Strange....

How come the version numbers are different?

Just a guess, but the ROM that shipped with my handset was 1.76.61.3, and the original generic was 1.76.405.6 so I reckon the "61" identifies it as an Orange-specific ROM.

My serial number didnt work, tried 3 times, so I registered the serial number at HTC - Touch Phone, PDA Phone, Smartphone, Mobile Computer: HTC e-Club, went back to the download page for the ROM update and it worked.

That method worked for me.

HTC's site has to be the worst piece of crap.
So I've registered on the site, registered my Hero and yet still cannot download the update. It keeps bouncing me back to the main support page.
