Root [Sprint/Cricket] Which ROM for Stability AND Max Battery life?

I understand that each person's experience with a specific ROM can be different due to installed programs, cell/LTE/Wifi reception, but generally wanted to get pointed in the right direction for ROM suggestions based on your experience so far..

I'm looking for stability first. I guess the most stable would be the stock rom, but if I'm going to root, I might as well put a custom rom on...:)

Strong 2nd is battery life, and actually might be willing to sacrifice a bit of stability for significantly better battery life compared to stock.

Maybe suggestions could include a "top 3 roms" for stability, and separately for battery life?

Thanks!

If stability is a concern, then there is no question that the best ROM to go with is The People's ROM.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013463

Exceptionally stable, even with some of the mods/tweaks that have been added. Nothing get put in the ROM unless/until it is completely stable. Even on the stock kernel, battery life is a bit better. If you are interested in trying to get even more out of it, there are 3 additional kernels included in the installer. You can read up on them and start tweaking your settings for even longer battery life.

Head over to XDA and start reading. Won't find a better developer/moderator than Kennyglass123. All questions are welcomed in his thread and it isn't a ghost town like androidforums.com is deservedly becoming.

+1

AF for our phone is practically empty. I mostly look at at XDA but I'll pop in over here to answer questions that I'm able to answer

Thanks, bvbull! I've been reading through some of the xda threads, but it's a bit daunting with several hundred pages worth for each ROM...this is exactly the info I was looking for.

I'm definitely going to flash TPR as you suggested. What about Fat Ass rom?

Besides what is in the rom's OP -
Splits the Difference Sound Mod, (sounds good)
The Latest Rotating Lockscreen Mod (doesn't matter)
The Latest Camera Low Power Mod (sounds good)
Stock Kernel (sounds good, but I will try TPR's different kernels first)
Framework and toggle theming is now "back" to stock looks. (I like)
Note 2 Camera replaces stock GS3 camera!!! (cool)

Seems like those are the only differences.
According to OP, we can do dirty flash, which is cool too.

I've read that going from an CM/AOSP to a TW rom can cause issues. Is this true? If so, that makes me hesitant to move from TPR (or other TW roms) and try CM/AOSP roms.

I will also try the different kernels, but it seems both ktoonsez and agat's kernels are more for speeding up the phone. Is underclocking pretty much the biggest thing I can do with those kernels to increase battery life?

Besides TPR, any other ROMs that your experience has shown gives the best battery life (even if a bit less stable than TPR)? The Blazer rom seems to tout that as a major feature...

Appreciate it, MusicJunkie! It seems you're one of the few answering questions and helping here :)

No problem. I remember when I was just like most of the people here at AF for the HTC EVO 4G when I first rooted and started flashing. I was so green and XDA was foreign to me (even though I've had an account there years before joining AF, :p) and the people here helped me out. Gotta helps others now, lol.

Anywho, going from the same version of android for TW and CM isn't that bad (i.e. 4.1.x to 4.1.x). Going from one version of android for TW to a different version of android CM/AOSP can be bad (i.e. 4.1.x - 4.2.x). I recommend a nandroid backup of the current settings (use common sense when to make them and when you don't need to make them) and a full wipe (factory reset, cache, dalvik, system) then flashing the ROM. It eliminates all problems that could be caused by a dirty flash when going from TW to CM/AOSP. Going from 4.2.x CM/AOSP to a lower version of android (either CM/AOSP or TW) is a little tricker.

Google has added "profiles" to their 4.2 version. The best way I can explain it is thinking Windows users accounts. I don't know exactly how it works but solely basing this off of the example I provided, essentially you log off one profile on your phone (how, I have no clue) and you can log into a different one because your settings etc is saved in it's own folder, separate from other users. To properly downgrade android versions, you would need to format internal memory. I tried CM10.1 (android 4.2.x) and when I didn't like the nightly I downgraded to TW. I noticed a '0' folder in my internal memory. I couldn't get rid of it without formatting my internal storage. Make sure to move all of your pictures, files, etc. that you want to keep to your computer or SD card if you want to keep them before formatting as it will wipe the storage.

I hope this made sense. I'm watching Suits and responding to text messages and being lazy and don't feel like proofreading, LOL.

TPR seems like the new favorite. To me it's just WAAAAAAAAAAY to much to set up, lol. For my phone, I like everything simple and stock TouchWiz looking (I have ALWAYS been a fan of TouchWiz even when I had HTC's Sense). Blazer is good. 2.1 started messing up with my Airave, mainly because of the Ktoonz kernel I believe. Couldn't find just a plain stock kernel w/no added tweaks or whatever so I went back to stock.

Check my signature and you'll see the ROM list I put together (trying to maintain daily at least) with all the ROMs (TW and CM/AOSP/AOKP) for our phone. Just click the links and read at least the 1st if not 1st through 3rd posts. Usually everything is in the first post but sometimes the poster will put them in the first 3.

The Fatass version is basically a fully loaded, you get everything version of TPR. You can do the same thing with TPR if you want, you just have to select it. The idea behind TPR, besides stability, is to give options. The Aroma installer lets you choose kernels, home button action, lag hack, camera shutter sounds, launcher, 4.2 camera, etc. Each of them, you can be confident, are perfectly stable.

The sound mod can be appealing to some, I suppose, but I don't like the little bit of distortion you get at the higher volumes. It is better with the "split the difference", but still... At any rate, you can choose with TPR in the installer.

The rotating lock screen seemed to slow my screen rotation down and I uninstalled it. YMMV.

Low power camera mod is on TPR.

Kernel can be selected in TPR.

The only thing that I kind of like with the Fatass version is the relatively stock theme. That said, now that I use the Morphology zip, the stock theme doesn't matter to me. You can use it to get a very stock looking theme, or change some things up. I have a custom theme that is definitely not stock (if you know the GS3), but could pass as stock if you didn't know any better.

As for the camera, the Note 2 camera is pretty cool, but not a huge difference over the GS3 camera, in my opinion. The 4.2 camera is an option with TPR and is really cool for the Sphere mode.

I mean, I guess it is a lot to set up compared to other ROMs, but what are we talking about, 1 minute's worth of decisions? Just a few screens in Aroma to get through and you're done. Nice having the options, too, in my opinion.

Add in Morphology to create a more stock looking theme and you add another 2 minutes or so. Once done, you can save a backup and get that theme whenever you want.

Like I said, I agree that it is technically more work, but it is still just a few minutes and you get TONS of options.

Why has this forum become such a ghost town, just curious?

I'd tell you why, but I'd end up getting my pee pee slapped.

Appreciate it, MusicJunkie! It seems you're one of the few answering questions and helping here :)

Sorry, I was over at XDA reading up :D.

Jump in to the TPR thread over there. A lot of questions have been answered, so a search is definitely quicker than posting for a lot of things, but it isn't full of jackals or anything. Best dev and mod on the board, too.

I'm not talking about setting up in aroma installer, I was referring to when the phone boots. On ever TW ROM I have specific settings I change and those are constant. There's just a lot to play around with in TPR and the FA KANG variant.

Good ROM, don't get me wrong.

I appreciate all the help! :) Great info, this is good to know before I go flashing all over the place. I think I'll stick with roms with the same version of android in the beginning then.

As long as I do a full wipe, then flash the rom, will the apps that I restore using TiBu have any issues?

Any time I do a full wipe, even if TiBu restores all the apps without issues, I would still need setup all my home screens with my app shortcut layout, correct?

If I decide I want to go back to the previous nandroid backup, it will restore the nandroid image...are there any apps that I would still need to manually restore with TiBu?

Great to have your thoughts and opinions o this. Options never hurt, as long as the platform is stable, so I don't see a real need with the FA version, especially with the morphology zip that I will definitely look into

No worries, it's not like I ever EXPECT you or MusicJunkie or anyone else to respond, but of course I do appreciate it! Yeah I def will post on XDA, and will search before I do :)

No problem. The only time you'll have an issue restoring with TB, usually, is if you restore system app data. It doesn't play well coming from one custom rom to another, usually.

Yes you would have to reset up your home screens.

If you restore a nandroid backup you don't have to reinstall any apps unless you installed an app on another rom that wasn't on your previous nandroid backup.
