How good (or bad) are the networks 3G speeds?

Just wondering how good the 3G speeds are in larger city area's. I'm in the metro Detroit area (suburbs) and wondering since some sites say Sprint's network here (for data) is the slowest of the major carriers. (at&t, verizon and tmobile all get four out of four stars while sprints network only gets three out of four stars... all get four for voice)

I second the PC Mag link Mog posted. Good stuff there!!

Speaking from experience though, last year my boyfriend and I took a two week vacation and drove all over the US, stopping at various locations here and there. I must say VM disappointed me bigtime. At the time, he had Verizon and I think perhaps twice totally lost connection which only lasted an hour or two at most. I on the other hand seldom had a working phone throughout the entire trip. I made fun of his piece of crap phone while he made fun of my piece of crap connection.

A few months after we came back home my VM connection just totally died. I live in the burbs to the North East of Chicago, where you would think the Sprint network would work decently.

Currently a very happy T-Mobile customer. ;)

Concerning Voice and Data... do the two always go together when there is good OR bad connections? I guess what I'm asking is... if data is NOT working can voice still be working? I'm not and never will be a data hog but I must have good voice coverage at all times. If data is not there... I can live with that but not having voice is a big deal. And will the answers change when all voice is carried over data... whatever that is called... volte? (being older I'm not up on all the tech speak) And thanks for pointing out the thanks... again... I'm not on forums much and just forget that little box down there.
