New android devices?

So what are all the options for android on at&t?

I know there is the backflip which I'm keeping in mind. I know nexus 1 is full price (529$). I've read about some unlocking european versions of the droid.

Are there any upcoming devices I should look into? I am pretty much stuck on at&t.. and I don't care to change service.. With that said, I am aware at&t kills pretty much anything you get a discount on...

I will pretty much never be able to convince my parents/afford a unlock phone in addition to rent/bills/ect... then add a data package after an unlocked phone >.<;

With that said.. I still want to keep open my options, even if the unlocked is more expensive.. Maybe around my birthday I can get them to pay at least part of the price for an unlocked device.

Right now AT&T is being stingy with android. They are still all glowly with iphone...so yeah its pretty much Backflip for now, then the Dell Aero should be coming out soon (that is the the Dell mini 3 version for AT&T) Both are a little substandard power wise and more like kids android phones then actual android phones.

There were rumors of us getting the HTC Passion, but I'm really starting to doubt that. It will probably go to Tmobile like all the other good GSM phones.

right now it seems if you want a real android phone with decent specs You'll have to upgrade to an Iphone 3GS, sell it on Ebay and Buy a nexus one.

lol good idea XD.

I would wait at least until the end of the year. As much as i'm not wild about the backflip I still encouraged my girlfriend to get one lol.

I am no fan of t mobile to be honest though. However, the way I see it now is ultimately backflip just came out, its at&t's first phone. Odds are they will release (alot) more by the end of the year. I mean lets face it, they finally broke away from the iphone some. So give it a little bit of time for them to see what else happens.

I would at least wait and see if an htc phone comes out for at&t. Htc seems to really nail all the android phones well, motorola seems to be doing some experimental stuff (which is kinda cool in its own right, I must admit I like the motoblur features, which are 150 a year for iphone with the mobile me crap).

And yeah backflip is weak on the hardware side.. but, it is a free android phone which is a great start even if it needs work.

AT&T announced they will be adding 5 phones this year. The Motorola and Dell we heard about (I was hoping it would be the Dell mini 5 but oh well) And an "exclusive HTC" many were hoping this would be the HTC Passion...for now we have no idea which HTC it is, but I fear AT&T's meddling is what is actually taking a long time for these phones to come out.

So that makes two HTC phones? I heard at&t were getting two, one would be exclusive.

Either way Since i'm on my parents plan, I can't go anywhere.. And I'm a while from an upgrade.

And there is always a risk at&t will meddle. However, honestly, I can handle them adding stuff, there is always a way to get rid of it. I can handle them trying to stop third party apps, there will be a way around it. My biggest issue is I hope they come out with decent phones.

Like with the e71x i got rid of at&t crapware. The biggest issue is when features get removed. I forgot what all it was however, there were some pretty big features removed altogether from e71x that was in the e71 that to this day I haven't heard of being fixed.

It does help that at&t had nothing to do with the creation of that version of the nexus one I'm sure.

With that said, if anyone is going to deliver a good android phone, my money is on htc, lets face it they made nexus one, they work the closest with google from what I can see and they know what android is suppose to be.

So.. hopefully they will have a line in the sand.. or if all else fails, I'm sure they will offer some "support" to reverse anything done by at&t.

I could handle that "here guys, this is *our version* of the software that was suppose to come with these phones" and offer a fix on their website.

I hope so, but you have to think along the lines of what has already happened:

Droid comes out, good Android phone...sometime afterward Backflip certainly less of a phone

Dell Mini 5 is announced and coming soon...after that announcement the Dell Aero is announced...less of a phone.

Lets hope HTC breaks the trend The Incredible and Desire have been announced and are starting to become available, what happens when AT&T annoucnement comes.

I'm thinking we'll see one announcement per month from AT&T for April, May, and June. Backflip was announced in February, Dell Aero in March.

I'm guessing HTC Legend or Desire (or a re-named clone of one of them) in April.
Then the other HTC phone in May.
Then the North America Galaxy S clone in June.
The Dell Mini 5 may replace any of the above.

Looking back through rumors and phones that have gone through the FCC, there's really nothing that's in AT&T's GSM/3G network other than the Legend, Desire, Galaxy S and Mini5. (The Legend doesn't sport EDGE so I may be wrong there. I'm not 100% on what frequencies go where.)

AT&T's press release said they'll have 5 Android phones by June 30th. I just don't see there being time to send a phone through the FCC that hasn't already gone through it and still have it "launched" by June. Maybe I'm putting too much stock in the FCC leaks. Maybe something snuck through. I do know that I'm just plain tired of waiting.

Maybe you guys should dump ATT, the Real Android phones are waiting, Sprint, TMO, VZW.....

I can be patient. :) Really, Sprint won't have a "real" phone until the Evo comes out, TMO only has the N1 right now (and only subsidized on one plan), and VZW only has the Droid (until the Incredible is launched). Yeah, there are other Android phones at those places, but those are more entry and mid-level phones.

The desire has not been announced on a US carrier yet. It just came to EU so we could still end up with it. The incredible is VZ that is known. I am hoping for the Desire and since EU got it first even if AT&T try to screw with it will have already been rooted for us.

To my knowledge the Android phones coming to AT&T are:

HTC Desire(I believe it was codenamed 'Bravo')
Samsung Galaxy S
Dell Aero(Mini 3)
And potentially a Motorola slider called the 'Twist'.

With the Backflip that would make 5 subsidized phones in total if they can get them all out by June 30th(not likely)

I'd guess the next Android to come out on AT&T will be the HTC Desire which is rumored to be sometime in May/June.

Well I would hope you are right on the May/June and it being the Desire next. But consier there have been no postings about a FCC registering for this phone and the Aero has already gone through and they have announced it just not given a date yet.

All I know is that AT&T needs to get busy on gettting a higher end android phone out. VZ has the Increadible coming on the 29th.

I thought the Desire went through FCC in late 2009 under a different codename... At least that's what somebody posted on androidforums in a different thread. However, a quick Google search has come up with a big fat zero. Part of the problem is that just a few months ago there was all kinds of confusion regarding the HTC Bravo/NexusOne/Incredible, with names and frequencies being mixed and matched (understandable as they're all essentially the same phone on the inside).

Interesting side-node, an AT&T friendly Legend DID pass the FCC.

The big question here is, what could AT&T possibly offer that fits this description (before June 30th): "An HTC smartphone, based on the Android platform, and an AT&T exclusive."

The simple fact of the matter is AT&T promised 5 phones to be "launched" in the first half of 2010. They're running out of time. (That being said, the Aero was "launched" in March and there's still no word on when it will actually be available.)
