Root [Virgin Mobile] Root Flashable MG2 Firmware and /system Update 8/12

I didn't lose any apps, data, or settings with the update. Painless and easy for me although a small few have experienced issues with the update and I'm not sure why so be sure to back up your stuff before you update just in case. I completed the process within five minutes without a hitch.

I have TWRP and SuperSU am I good to go for flashing it or do I have to go back to g60's recovery and SuperUser?

well i did have a boot loop at first but that was easily fixed due to having cwm 6 all i did was flash punkman original slim rom. booted that rebooted applied the updates with wipes for the rom got the fix root thing. booted again two reboots to finish was able to download supersu and went to town with a clean mg2 build and my baseband stayed md7. what i have noticed is the phone is more responsive then before with everything. BT, WIFI and all state changes and reboots and all. i did loss the 4way reboot but thats ok

WOW!!!
Ok so i made some progress. I wiped again and used TheBritton's stock rom zip that i modded earlier with the flash count reset. Booted that up, no change. Booted recovery and only installed the first update zip, it succeeded and i rebooted successfully but still no change. Booted to recovery again and installed the second update zip and again it finished and i rebooted. It asked to fix root before exiting recovery AND it rebooted all the way. I now have MG2 build with MD7 baseband STILL with no lte. Tried to flash punkmaxx's stock modem but it still fails. I think i need to flash a modem. If anyone can help with that i would really appreciate it.

Your device's current firmware is not supported to update firmware via kies.
Current firmware version: PDA:MG2/PHONE:MD7/CSC:MG2 (XAS)

I am not, by any means, trying to insult your intelligence here. But, sometimes we forget to check the obvious places for answers.

Now that you've made some progress with your MG2 update, when you boot up into the home screen, try going into Settings --> More settings (under Data usage) --> Mobile networks --> Network mode --> Ensure LTE / CDMA is the option selected.

I hope I have helped you.

Also, to fix your baseband mismatch, you could try doing a factory reset from within the ROM itself.

I try switching back and forth between cdma/lte with each test but no diff. I did not however try the factory reset within. Trying now, thanks!

so forgive my ignorance as I'm a big n00b to the root community with the s3, but what does flashing this firmware do? is it anything similar to what flashing firmware/radios did to the evo v? (better reception, etc) I'm just a little confused.

While we're at it, I had my own question. Before I flashed this update, I wanted to reset my flash count to "0". Is there a flashable zip I could use to do so? If not, will triangle away work on the the VM S3?

This flash is a firmware update. Usually that is bug fixes, driver updates and such.

I have some code i inserted into a copy of TheBritton's stock zip package. It resets the flash count to 'No' meaning '0', every time i flash it. Your more then welcome to the code if you want. Let me know and i'll pm you.

If you wouldn't mind PMing that to me, I'd appreciate it. Did the factory reset work for you?

As much as I would love to take full credit for the stock zip package I just want to clarify and bring recognition to g60madman and punkmaxx for those unaware. g60madman helped with the nandroid backup and punkmaxx packaged the zip. All I did was extract my stock files from the device immediately after unboxing :)

I appreciate it and I appreciate your work too, Jupiter!

Okay, carry on :D

I didn't know that. thanks for clarifying, he's a good man for sure so thanks to him for such awesome work!!!

Awesome! These words can't show it, but I am extremely happy for you! Another success story.
Oh snap, I misunderstood. Yes i tried the factory reset. It didn't work. I meant the flash reset worked perfectly for me. Thanks for the idea though. As it stands i have mg2 build but md7 baseband with no lte. I've got tons of work in the morning so won't get back to this till afternoon. Thanks for everyones help.

I see midnight rom has the latest update integrated into it.. might give that a try when you're up to it :)

The baseband was not changed in this update even if you let the phone install it from stock... The build was changed to MG2 but my baseband is still MD7

Thanks for this but I'm just a tad confused How is it that we change our baseband to MG2 .. I flased both files with a back up I had of youre rom but I just restored system and boot then flashed both files and after about 6-10 min it booted up fine I did how ever lose root ( and I used twrp)

I'm a bit confused too as this update did in fact change my baseband to MG2:

Yes, I believe users should use g60madmans CWM 6.0.2.8 to update only because I know this recovery worked fine for punkmaxx and myself. When following punkmaxx's steps you will receive a prompt in recovery that asks if you want to "fix root".. select yes and reboot system.

Upon the first rebooting after the update the phone will prompt to reboot one more time to "finalize the firmware upgrade"

Many thanks for the guide & files! I went through CWM Recovery after having a rooted stock rom and it worked like a charm. Anyone have any clue however what on earth is new about this update? I tried looking but I see no difference (well except that my google talk is now google hangouts but I could have just done that out of the play store)

I never got that last prompt. Only to fix root in recovery. Any ideas as to why?
