I just bought my first smart phone last week. I purchased a Droid Ultra from verizon and I looking for some app advice.

Trying to find a free app for texting that helps organize my texts. I don't like the preset app that came with the phone.

I also would like some advice on some basic apps and what you might consider some "MUST HAVE APPS".

Should I be careful with wifi or 4G and roaming charges?

If these are common questions please direct me to any existing posts.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Hi Dabob and welcome to Android Forums!

Can't help you with "organizing texts" other than SMS Cleaner, which can purge old texts and help maintain memory.

I suggest Cerberus right off as your security app.
AVG for anti-malware. Google Play Music for... well... music (my preference, I have All Access).
AirDroid for wireless coupling to a PC.
Camscanner if you handle a lot of documents: awesome.
Feedly for news feed, and
Skifta for wifi feed of your pics and videos to an HDTV.
And of course, Swiftkey Keyboard is the perpetual #1 or #2 best seller for Android and I highly recommend it.

Aren't you glad you asked? :)

Not sure what you are looking for for messaging but (and this is honestly a shocker!) Verizon Messages is actually very nice. It's customizable, I hate the stock look and the 'bubbles', got right rid of them. I tried Chomp and Handcent, just didn't like them.
And since The_Chief brought up keyboards...look at Kii too. I use that and SwiftKey and both are very nice.
+1 on Cerberus.

As well as all the excellent suggestions above, you're amost certainly going to need a file manager at some stage.

Re data roaming: you definitely need to be careful with that as the prices can be astronomic (though I believe the EU  is going to limit charges within Europe). I keep data roaming turned off and rely on 'free' WiFi when I travel.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.
What I mean by organize text is an app that sort text by contact. Right now I keep getting a running list of text messages sorted by time sent/received. Example left say I have get 3 texts from Mike and 5 from Dave. I see a running list of of all 8 messages instead of them being sorted my contact Mike (3) and Dave(5).
If I'm still not being clear yet please just suggest the best free Text apps.
Thanks again for all the advice so far and looking forward to any new suggestions.

You should be able to change that. Look around in your messaging settings before downloading a texting app.

My must-have list would include:

WeatherBug. IMHO the best weather app on the market.
HD Widgets.
Nova Launcher.
Google Voice - visual voice mail
GPS Status - reads the status of every sensor on the phone
Swiftkey - really speeds up typing
iHeartRadio
Zedge - all of the customizations you could imagine

You have an awesome phone! Welcome!
