Help any way to override stupid "power saving" settings?

Hey everyone,

Does anybody know how to override the super irritating and counter-productive feature whereby when the battery gets under 5%, the screen refuses to go to full brightness, the camera refuses to operate, etc?

These features are positively ******ed and all they do is effectively reduce battery life, since they cause the user to be unable to use the phone as he wishes at under 5% battery.

Short answer: no. I believe the power-saving settings are built in to Android itself. Annoying as they are though, they do help the phone stay on longer when power is low.

Your phone is operating as it was designed. The fastest way to kill the battery is to use the phone when the charge is below 15%. Do yourself a favor and read up on how to properly use & maintain the battery. You'll get far better life out of it.

Battery saving essentially cuts off anything considered non essential- like the camera.
Are you not able to stick your phone on a charger throughout the course of the day?

While your reply seems well intended, and the information is even potentially helpful, it doesn't address or refute my initial claim. It may well be that using features like the camera or the screen at full brightness are inefficient from a perspective of preserving the life of a given battery. But your assumption that a user should use the phone to that end is arbitrary, and it stands in sharp contrast to the axiom that the user decides how he wishes to use the phone. It scarcely seems necessary to point out that a user could well find himself in a situation where snapping an important picture, say, might be well worth the cost of whatever damage is incurred to the battery from a photo being taken.

The counterproductive effect of this type of well-intended thinking becomes even more obvious if we stop to consider that, after all, the limitations such as no photos are hopelessly arbitrary and not likely to match even most user's rankings of essentiality of features, let alone all user's rankings. Why not, for example, simply cause the phone to shut off below 15% battery, if using it below that level is sub-optimal for preserving the long-term life of the battery and the user's desires are subordinated to that arbitrary goal? Oh right--because that takes the choice of how to use the phone and the chance to gain utility from it away from the user and makes the phone less useful. Shutting off the camera at under 15% battery life does exactly the same thing.

I agree....

there maybe a small negative to using camera below a certain battery power level...
but that should be up to the user to decide to use or not.

it could be an emergency and a photo was required... accident.. babies first steps... whatever.. user should be able to use the features as needed/wanted/required.

maybe a warning .. might pop up.. but still let the user by pass it.
it is our phone.. and if I want to kill my battery to take that picture.. then let me.

fwi.. I have never tried to take a picture.. when my battery is that low.
next time it drops below 5%.. I am going to give it a try.

Just buy a 2nd battery and keep it with you at all times, so you don't have to worry about it...that's a far simpler solution than nitpicking about it.

Constantly running a Li-on battery into the ground makes it hit the 5% mark so much faster...so in actuality, you're simply doing far more harm than good doing that. And you complain about the OS not being well designed. Ya, they should have written it so it stops working altogether at 15% and prevented people who don't think from doing more harm to their batteries, instead of whining about it here.

you are having a great time.. meeting new people.
you find yourself talking to a super model and her friends.
your friends are in another part of the bar.. and don't know what u are doing.

they got to leave.. but you want to take a pic with them
they are in a hurry to another party... invitation only.. you cant go!
they don't like taking pics.. but give in to you.. to take a quick pic.
so you can prove to your buddies.

out comes your smartphone. been having so much fun..
have not seen it in a few hours. you wake it up.. and start the camera.
but wait.. the battery just dropped below 15%.
camera don't work.. NO problem!!! you got your spare battery.
the sexy models are getting up to go...
you pull out your battery.. they look at you funny.
"don't worry, it only take a minute to change battery"
you are taking apart your case.. your hands are fidgety.
damn case!!! the fresh battery drops on the floor.
you pick it up.. get it in the phone.. close the back cover.
girls start walking away.. blowing you kisses and laughing.
your wonder phone finally boots up.. after 10 secs.
you are following them out the door.
your camera app is finally up.. and take a pic of..
a group of women piling into a cab...

of course this does not happen often.. bar.. models.
and your battery drops to low.
but if you could choose to by pass that power savings.
and get that proof to prove to your friends.

a similar situation can happen..
with an accident and you need to take pics..
or your 9 month old baby trying to walk...
your dog doing something very stupid...
your buddy about to propose to his girl..
your son making a huge play in game..
the cost of missing these pictures.. is huge.

I have 2 spare batteries... but i can not predict the future.
and would like to have the option to make a choice .. if i need it.
the few times i MIGHT choose to by pass the safety..
would not do that MUCH harm to that battery. and the cost of a replacement battery..
is such a moot point

Umm... I'm sorry, but if you really need to "prove" to your friends that you were actually able to talk to some attractive women, I think your phone's usability under low battery life is the LEAST of your worries... Lol

You have a point; however, like most things they will go to the lowest common denominator. Most people don't know about proper batter maintenance. Some still think it's good to run your phone until it turns off before you charge it. So they will run their batteries down fully, shorten the life of the battery,then complain to Samsung about how their battery and phone are junk and won't hold a charge anymore, and something must be wrong with it, or it's just a low quality product.
It will cost them less customers and bad press by the few people like you who are willing to accept they might be shortening the life of their batteries, than the replacements for people who kill their battery in less than a year.

Root your phone and you will be able to bypass the low battery warning and prove to your friends you talk to hot girls!

If i'm not mistaken you can also download a 3rd party camera app and it will bypass the low power settings.

Just regard "power saving mode" as "out of battery". It is hardly the phones fault if your not near a charger. The question to ask is whether you want to make a call with 5% charge left or deaplete the battery entirely by taking a photo? Yes, it's annoying but what would you rather have in what is primairly a phone : The ability to still make calls for a while, know you need a charger or the alternative where the battery percentage is recalibrated to show an actual percentage of 5 show as 0% for the good of your battery and the phone automatically switch off?

As stated it is a design call by Android . Lithium ion batteries are damaged by reducing then down to "flat" then recharging, something that will reduce their life drastically. I suppose an accurate percentage and a warning at 15% and then 5% and "power saving" mode (incidentally the flash on the camera won't work 15% or below either) is probably better for most users, and the probably the most battery friendly way of doing things. You don't think such decisions on how the OS behaves isn't researched first any way, and is probably a compromise between users wants and battery efficiency.
