Is there room for another Android development site?

I am currently planning to launch as development forum (similar to XDA and RootzWiki), however the development projects will be organized and searchable. Do you think there is room for another development site, say for example it targeted devices currently not on XDA? What features would you request. I do have a large interest in development/Android personally.

I'm interested in developer's and other people's opinions :)

I think good fair moderation is essential (like here at AF).
XDA has a bad atmosphere imo
Im not sure if theres a void there for another site tbh

I respect the rules and would like to thank the moderators for keeping the thread open. I am not allowed to post personal links just yet.

Any ideas for categories? I am thinking I will include a few devices at launch.

I dont know tbh. Im not a dev but i think there should be distinct areas where devs can chat about whichever project without being pestered by users who dont know code. Then an area to announce/launch a project and updates(maybe a beta test area within that) then a help area for average users of that project and then a feature request area.
I dont know how possible that is but i hope it would solve the problem of devs being bombarded by requests, ETAs (ETA should be banned lol), and in the general help area for that project, users help other users and the dev can chime in when he has time :)
All of these areas should be under one whole thing with the project name.
I think if you manage to make a site where devs and users are separated but can still interact then you could get somewhere

XDA has most phones.. anything else.. would be very small.. and not much traffic for that forum. There may not be much development going for these devices.
if a device starts to get traction from public demand and developers.. XDA would add a sub-forum for it.

so to answer your question...sorry
NO.. there may not be room for a forum website for phones that are not listed on XDA.

this is just my opinion.. so I can be wrong.

Im undecided if theres room for another site but me and many others now use Google+ communities to follow rom teams etc and dont set foot in XDA but G+ is pretty limited so a well structured site could be successful if the owner has the right contacts and attitude to make it become popular.
XDA is one of those organic things that could never have been planned but from what i see, people are really sick of it

Thank you all for the feedback :)

I really appreciate it. Here's a flowchart (below) basically outlining the site's structure.

I really am determined to make this work. I've invested a lot of time, money and effort into it. Indiegogo is next.

:)

I'm just going to be that guy.

Per the very clear statement in the rules against using us to put up competing sites, and given that it's easy for devs to get recognition and support here -

How is what you're proposing not using our server bandwidth to compete with us?

I'm not posting any links ;)

I have no intention really of competing with you. It's more development orientated than Android Forums.

We provide a complete developers subforum and will even provide you with your own custom forum. ;) :)

For free.

If you're a developer (and we already recognized you as such), you know what developers need.

If you'd like us to offer more, let me know.

If you don't and just want to offer it on your own, fabulous, go for it with my wishes for success.

But I still don't see how this thread is really anything more than advertising - because you're talking to users here, not developers.

Please help me understand what I'm not seeing. :)

the OP said.. he would be targeting .. smaller unknown devices.. NOT listed on XDA.

so not competing directly with AF or XDA. but is there really a demand/need/market????

A direct request to me or a post in the Suggestion Box will get you a forum for any of the smaller, unknown devices, so long as it's available to markets frequented by our members.

We're very flexible. ;) :)

can I get a special sub-forum.. for porn on android???

what??
we all been wanting it! don't deny!

We used to be a lot more flexible about porn discussions. Especially when Flash came to Android.

Then came the hardcore image spam followed by the malware.

We cite the family-friendly doctrine for keeping that out now and those are the reasons why.

Paid apps for free, live wallpapers with weird permissions (or any weird app that way), and porn - still the big infection vectors.

Advertising was never the intention :)

The benefit of my site would be a bug tracker (which can not always be done in a thread) and the ability for a discussion which only developers can take part in. Even thinking about a development console in which teams can collaborate on projects (they will also get a 'team page').

If we're voting ... I think this thread is "beating a dead horse" ... the question was asked in message one and answered IMNHO in message two.

... Thom

We're not voting at all.

I've read every word of the thread before posting.

I'm engaging the OP in my capacity as a member of the admin team and asking for his input in order to understand if there are are hidden issues that admin ought act upon.

And doing so with full transparency, rather than locking this and taking it to a private chat, and stirring up the usual unnecessary suspicions.

I think I see.

Let me consider this further and get back to you. :)

I get the feeling the new rom devs i chat to would like something fresh and less "corrupt" than xda (corrupt is maybe a bit harsh)

People shift from forums all of the time.

Most all of us pledge to not disclose dispute details in public.

The upshot is that you usually only hear one side of the story. And I've seen plenty of public charges that were fabricated from thin air.

It makes for great drama.

I'd hate to see bad things said about AF elsewhere, so let's please give others the same courtesy here. ;)

Cheers! :)
