S5 vs HTC one

If camera quality is important to you at all then the Galaxy S5 is the phone to go for, Samsung's new 16MP camera with ISOCELL technology vs a 4MP "Ultrapixel" camera (Same sensor as the first HTC One), it's not even close.

Camera comparisons will not very kind to the new HTC One.

But if you don't care about the camera then it's worth considering, I can't help think the Galaxy S5 has allot more going for it though even if allot of the features are gimmicks.

Okay...I need to say something about this...

In the past 2 days, I keep seeing your username pop up around the HTC One and HTC M8. You keep trying to compare the camera quality. After looking through all of this, you obviously know absolutely nothing about cameras. If you're going to discuss camera comparisons, please use actual terminology or show examples...don't just point out the fact that Ultrapixels aren't as great as some people may think, because that has been your only defense.

If you say so, the phone has just been released and I'm looking to upgrade so of course I'm posting here allot more.

Anyway I'm not going to bite because it will only result in me getting warnings which doesn't take much here, personal attacks are for the mods to deal with, not me. :D

So hello and goodbye because you are now on my ignore list.

I just got done doing a comparison between the HTC M7, HTC M8, Samsung S4, and the LG G2.

None of them are really a deal breaker over the others. For me, it really comes down to the LG G2 and M8. For a user like me, I would really like to have that SD Card slot that the M8 has over the LG G2. It also supports the new 128GB cards. If the LG G2 had this, combined with stock version of Android or the impossible reality of a stable version of HTC Sense 6 (on a phone that isn't from HTC), I'd go with the LG G2 in a heart beat just because of its camera stabilizer and bigger screen added on.

My issue with the G2 is the flaky GPS. I use a golf app on my phone, so GPS accuracy is a must. There are multiple reports of the GPS being so far off on the G2 using it for navigation is tough. Certainly not accurate enough for my purposes.

Taking photo with a camera is never a serious thing. I do it because it is quick on your phone as you always carry it and it looks great on FB and other website. Nothing critical. So any half decent phone would do.

For serious stuff and priceless memories, I use a good camera.

Well you know what they say, the best camera is the one you have with you. :)

Tbh on the camera reviews you can see the quality dip compared to other cameras. Scenic shots that have trees for example, you can see pixelation quite easily even without zooming in.

I'm not saying the camera is bad, if I remember though the idea behind the low pixel count in the original was most people will only view their pictures on the phone and upload them to social networks. Which for that it will be perfect.

The most interesting thing I find about the camera it's second camera that is used for depth so you get a quick and easy bokeh effect on the picture. And I think it was mentioned in the launch that the camera app sdk is opened up to developers so more stuff could come out. Might be wrong on that though but it would be fantastic if they did, I know they definitely allowed it for blinkfeed.

I'll try and test this when I'm on my break. I've heard of similar issues with phones pre-2013.

Looks water resistant enough to me! :)

My only concern with that video is the bubbles that you can see coming out of the bottom. That typically means that water is displacing air somewhere.

Obviously the phone didn't have any issues..., but what will be the long term effects of that submerging? Where were those bubbles coming from?

Sure, none of us are going to dunk our phones like that, but it is nice to know that a quick accidental dunking shouldn't do damage.

Well they did have a One Mini last year, so they may release another one this year.
The One Mini was a rather lower-specced device than the One though. The Sony Z1 Compact is the one example I can think of where the smaller version has kept the high-end specs. I hope that others will follow, but most manufacturers tend to be conservative and repeat their previous pattern, so am not overly optimistic.

Why all the advertisement for "expect buyers remorse on 3/25" With an advertisement slogan like that I would have expected something a little better. Other then the body to me it seems the S5 is the way to go. Not sure how many people are going to have "buyers remorse on 3/25" because they didn't "hold" out for a metal body. Not to mention the only one you could buy on 3/25 was the HTC. So maybe they were trying to say expect buyers remorse from buying their own phone.
Any date rumors on when the X2 will come out? Do need a phone this year, but wanted a "wow" phone.

They both seem like good phones, but both are proportionally larger than their displays. Heck, the M8 is even bigger than the S5 and has a smaller display. I suppose the M8 needed it for the "Boom" Speakers. Both have a big negative for me in that they are too big for their relative displays.

I like having a bigger battery on my S4, so the battery in the M8 is too small for my use. If it had a 3,000 mah battery that would be a much better fit, considering non removable. The 4MP camera though seems complete nuts and will hurt sales. Nice move though adding an sd slot. One step forward with sd and two back with the 4MP camera and 2600 mah battery.

The S5 has issues too. Loaded with tons of features that Samsung thinks most consumers would use and I still do not understand why the device has to be so big. If it is all the extra sensor bling, that is one step back IMO as well.

They seem a net wash and neither a compelling reason for me to jump like the S3 to S4 was. S4 will do fine for another year. Nice device.

Pictures are more than just MP. Last years ONE used a 4MP camera as well, and it was lauded for its excellent low light shooting capabilities. Its certainly not a step back.

Unfortunately many consumers fall into the pitfall of higher number must be better, without fully understanding everything that goes into the numbers.

8MP I can accept, but 4MP looks rough when blowing to bigger picture frame. Most people will see the spec and shun the device if they value the camera higher in their minds. Perceived "reality" can bite.

Now that scenario I can understand, although I've only done it once. :)

The girlfriend blew up some photos I took with my Nexus 5 when we were together on a trip, and I must say they look great.

I'd never done that before though.

Guys, check this camera comparsion out.

Galaxy S4 comes joint top with LG G2, HTC One M8 comes in last. :vroam:

Camera comparison: HTC One (M8) vs Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, iPhone 5s, LG G2, Nexus 5, Nokia Lumia 1520, Sony Xperia Z1S - Conclusion

Amazing (and disappointing) that it's last. Especially surprised that it's behind the Nexus 5. I think the vast majority of people would have preferred better quality images over the refocusing thing.. which is kind of a gimmick, albeit a nice one.

There's another comparison here which shows more the raw specs etc.

Unfortunately it seems kind of skewed though because it looks like anyone can add their own reasons.

I think ultimately it comes down to a choice between a better phone, technically, with the S5. Or better design and build quality of the HTC One. I would rather have the One, as I have a DSLR if I want to take pictures and the One's camera would probably suffice for when I didn't.

I had play with new One M8 yesterday at Verizon store too. The first thing that I noticed is how tall it is. It's really TALL, almost like Note 3. But it looks awkward next to Note 3 as it's got smaller width than Note 3. I can see why HTC fans are excite over this unibody aluminum design though it's mostly unchanged from One M7, just stretched in height. It's funny how Samsung is smoked for keeping the same design trend when M8 looks nearly identical to M7 with longer aspect ratio. To me S5 looks more different from S4 than M8 is from M7.

That is all last years HTC One was good at and when I say good I mean it did okay compared to what was available at the time.

Since then allot of new devices have been released and received software updates and camera firmware updates. In the latest comparison done with the HTC One M8 it was only marginally better in night conditions against the Galaxy S4 and lost in low light conditions.

There are other Android devices available now that are just as good as the HTC One in low light and none of them use Ultrapixels.

The iPhone 5S is also better at night and low light shots and again there are no Ultrapixels here either.

The Ultrapixel technology is meant to give an advantage in low light and it's not doing that, clearly the trade off hasn't worked and what they are left with is an average 4MP camera.

Here's a reminder of the OP's initial question:

My only concern is not having a replaceable battery. [...] For those of you with the other HTC products with a built in battery, do you have issues with running out of juice?

Perhaps somebody could do him the courtesy of actually addressing it instead of ignoring him to bang on about unrelated stuff? So far there's been zero input related to the OP, and that's simply not acceptable. :(
