Does anyone have an idea why there is a lag on my home screen when I press the home key to exit from an app, text etc...
? When I press the home key it takes me back to my home screen, the lag is the app icons or widgets loading, can take 3 or 4 seconds.

Are you using the stock Sony launcher or something like Nova/Apex?

Using stock Sony Launcher, on Android 4.3.

I've similar issues on 4.3 using Nova, I've not really found a decent fix yet.

I think if you've not been using it for a while (you're browsing, watching videos etc), it clears the home launcher from RAM meaning it has to reload when you go back to the homescreen.

I wonder if it's a 4.3 thing as I'm pretty sure I didn't notice it whilst I was on 4.2.2.

Yea I get it on stock launcher, Nova launcher and KK launcher. It is definitely just since 4.3, should hopefully fix when Kit-Kat gets pushed out.

It's really annoying. For a phone of this spec this shouldn't be happening. It's really off putting. It's happening quite a bit for me.

Apparently 4.4 is out for this phone in the UK and I am still waiting. On Vodafone unbranded phone.

Yea happens every time for me, pressing home button or back multiple times. It is irritating knowing you have such a high spec phone that suffers so much but I'm just trying to ignore it until update is released. I believe 4.4 has started rolling out in UK yes, Vodafone shouldn't be too long now, think 3 and O2 have got it...I'm on EE so I have a long wait.

Apparently KK update fixes mostly nothing, reading the XDA.. It seems that lag's still present and a lot of other new bugs..

KK has worked out mostly ok for me (but I appear to be in the minority).

I've small issues with the camera, but other gripes I'd had such as the lag mentioned here are gone.

Like many I have experienced lag with my android during use and at the screen unlock. I've tried many apps that claim to eliminate lag including the popular SEEDER app. I've tried seeder for a while and didn't see noticeable difference between it being installed and uninstalled. I now believe that it does seem to be a placebo effect.

Nevertheless I believe the key to combatting lag is not in the entropy perse'. So I am currently experimenting with another program called SETCPU. This programs allows you to control the android cpu frequency range. This might work because the android frequency fluctuates between maximum and minimum depending on demand. The time I experience screen lock lag is after a night's sleep and no activity for 8 hours say. At that time it takes many seconds to get the home screen and it's annoying because sometimes I might need access to my phone right away. Also even during frequent use navigating home is slow and it takes many seconds for the icons and widgets to load.

The idea is to raise the cpu minimum. I'm thinking that the screen lock lag is possibly due to the phone going into very low cpu frequency after a period of inactivity. The lowest frequency on my android is 96 MHz and the highest is 800 MHz. SETCPU gives you 5 frequency choices between the lowest and the highest. Try setting your minimum cpu usage to one notch or setting lower than the max because you do want your android to have some breathing room but not so much that it gets lazy and too comfortable sleeping at 96 MHz but also not running at maximum frequency constantly for no reason. The system doesn't always need that much power and you're just draining battery faster for nothing. So I wouldn't recommend setting the minimum the same as the maximum.

The setting one down from 800 MHz is 480 MHz roughly half of the full power which is fine. So this means that at any given moment whether after a full nights sleep or otherwise there will be a minimum of 480 MHz available to initiate from or wake up to as opposed to the bare minimum of 96 mhz. So far it seems to be working. My android is smooth and responsive now. But not enough time has passed to conclude. Tomorrow I'll see if the overnight screen lock lag was confronted. So try SETCPU. It is for rooted users however. If you need help on how to root your android I'll respond to your query.

update: 8/8/14

Ok it's about 2:30 am (I'm night owl) and I've been checking periodically for lag and screen lock lag using SETCPU, so far none. The screen unlock animation is in about 3 takes when I wake the phone up on occasion but it is opening right away as it should. I can tolerate that. Some tiny hesitations in home screen scrolling but tolerable now. I'll update after a full nights sleep for both me and my phone and tomorrow night I'll leave plugged into charger all night and see if and lag after 8 hours sleep ( or more if I sleep late)...
