Root "Debloated" my Event

A few days ago, I decided to remove some apps from my Event. I removed some system apps. I mostly removed apps that can be downloaded from Google Play, or be rid of altogether.

I strongly recommend you do a full backup of your apps before removing anything! Any app that can back up system and user apps should work. I use the latest version of Titanium Backup Pro on my Event to backup, reinstall, and remove system/bloat apps. This is because a system update may require the presence of these apps. When these apps are reinstalled, they should go back into internal storage. Note that some of these apps may revert to the factory installed version before they can be completely uninstalled.

If you have any doubts, simply freeze an app, then test an alternative for a day or two. If the alternative works well, back up the other app, then uninstall it.

After backing up the apps, make a copy of the backup set on an external HD, USB Stick, DVD, etc.

This is based on what I removed. I mention the alternatives I replaced them with in parentheses, if applicable.

SYSTEM APPS:

* Calculator 4.0.4 (handycalc)
* Camera 1 (Camera ICS+)
* Connections Optimizer
* Email (Gmail, or checked through web browser)
* Exchange Server
* Live Wallpaper Picker
* Self Service SZ_4.3.21
* Music Visualization Wallpaper
* The two Voicemail apps
* Voicemail Message Count 1.00

USER APPS:

All of these are downloadable as user apps from Google Play. If you do want to use these, I recommend that you backup and remove the ones from your phone, then download the latest version from Google Play. If you have Link2SD or a similar app on a rooted phone, you should be able to link them to internal memory. If they can be moved to SD card (Link2SD will show a SD card symbol next to a program), do this. Programs that can be moved to a SD card's primary partition can free up system RAM. The only exception I've found to this is with Andromizer, a system tweaking app. That should really go in internal storage, along with Superuser/SuperSU, home screen launchers, and CPU/Governor tweakers.

A huge upside for me is having these apps removed now allows me to run the official facebook app effectively! It can be a MEMORY hog at times, but because the extra apps aren't loaded anymore (no more CPU CYCLE hogging by any unwanted apps, even frozen ones), I don't experience any crashes because of facebook doing extra activity in the background.

I also reloaded the official twitter app, which is faster than using a web browser.

Finally, I'm getting my money's worth with this phone! I had contemplated upgrading to either a LG Optimus F3, or a Samsung Galaxy Victory. Probably would've gone with the F3, as I am a fan of LG's Android phones.

I picked up this phone at Radio Shack for $14 to use as a mp3 player, GPS and light gaming. Since I don't plan to activate it, I run it in airplane mode with Wi-Fi enabled. That does cause one popup when the phone is turned on.

I did notice that removing Mobile ID causes a constant popup, that may due to not activating the phone.

Seems that you need them for firmware updates.

My phone got the firmware update WITHOUT the system apps I removed. It's at 1.005VM.

Mine is on that software version also, however, when I go to updates to check, it says there is a Firmware update and proceeds to download it. Only thing is, when I reboot, i get an error. (Periodically it starts the download without going to updates)

Mine's at 1.005VM too, and I haven't applied the 2014 update yet (it scares me ).
So either the update doesn't change that version number, or the update didn't take in your case.

I'm trying to put together a copy of the update files (they live in /cache/delta), mayby someone can figure out what they are?
