i obtained a ZTE Sonata 4g that is SIM locked with a PUK code. Is there a way around it so I can use the phone?

Contact the carrier that phone was originally on and see if they can give you an unlock code. If it isn't reported lost, stolen, under contract, or a default bill they are usually OK with unlocking the phone.

Unforgiven is quite correct, just to add make a note of the PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code in case it happens again carriers, supply this code for free. If you try and guess or getting it wrong three times you'll need a new SIM card from them as well.
