Root [MetroPCS & T-Mobile] [KERNEL][MS659 & P659] Freedom Kernel Overclocked *Updated 9/9/14*

Guys This is for the Metro PCS version. If you want a kernel for t-mobile or virgin, you'll have to ask in your phone's forum to see if someone makes it for you.

Unfortunately T-Mobile and MetroPCS users share this one forum.

I restored the backup I made prior to flashing this kernel, so everything is fine now. In any case, thanks for working on this kernel.

Just flashed this on my F3 to try and get some better performance while playing X-Com. Noticed a difference right off the bat with the initial loading of the game.

It work???
I've flashed this onto my T-Mobile LG F3, and it doesn't brick the phone or anything, but it isn't working as expected. One thing I noticed is that all non-standard governors cause the CPU to spike to 1600 and stay there, regardless of the load (checked via SetCPU app). Then, whenever you do use a standard governor, like Interactive, the max it will go to is 973, regardless of load. If there is anything I can do to help further the development of this, let me know :).

Build: JZ054K
Software: P65910b

Kernel Updated

I added TRIM support which is found in android 4.3 and up.

I lowered the OC a bit to 1.404ghz, but don't worry I did some tweaks to keep the benchmarks up. This will improve battery life while still giving you good performance.

Instuctions:
  1. Just follow the same install instructions listed. That's it!
How it works:
  • TRIM will run automatically every time you reboot your phone. Only takes about 1 second. To confirm trim is working go to the /data directory with your file explorer and look for a file named "TRIM.log". That file will update every time you reboot with the date and time of TRIM-ing.
TRIM technical details

;)

Flashed it over the previous version of your kernel. Tested with a cpu app and it works like a charm. My phone seems faster too. Thanks GameTheory! :D

Just wondering if you can flash the stock rom for metro pcs on the t-mobile f3 since it does replace firmware and then try the kernel? If anyone is up for it to they can test it out.

Ok kentchristopher since you already have the firmware flashed, try the kernal and see if it works

Here's the actual button combo for 2nd-init recovery that was confirmed by someone that has actually worked on this recovery...

Toggle the volume buttons up and down repeatedly when the LG logo appears to get into recovery.

The method said by GameThoery works perfectly, but I perfer to toggle the back and menu led buttons since that also works when booting into recovery, and I think these buttons are easier to press.

Kernel Updated

I updated the kernel in preparation for a couple roms I'll be posting in the next few days. I'll try to post the first rom this afternoon when I get home from work.

;)

Wow can't wait to try it out along with your custom rom :D. Also I just want to congratulate you for being the first person to create a working custom kernel and rom for this phone, GameTheory, you're just amazing especially considering you don't even have this phone! :) And btw this kernel does work for the t-mobile f3, I don't see the problem others have cause the phone is overclocked and working without any problems from this kernel.

Kernel Updated

I made an installer that lets you pick between 2 kernels:
  1. Freedom Lite
  2. Freedom Overclocked
Freedom Lite features:
  • Unsecured
  • Loki'd
  • Frandom built in for increased speed - details
  • Android TRIM Support - details
  • Conservative governor
  • SmartassV2 governor
  • Intellidemand governor
  • Superbad governor
  • Init.D support - details
Freedom Overclocked features:
  • All the features of Freedom Lite
  • 1.404 ghz CPU overclock
  • 1.3 ghz L2 cache boost clock - details

Just flash the zip and during the flash you can choose which kernel to install.

NOTE:
Freedom Lite is for those that don't like to overclock or have phones that don't run well with overclock.

Wow so the freedom lite was made for this phone now cause I've seen it for other phone on your website. I guess this is good for those who have the t-mobile f3 since overclock doesn't work for them, even though it works for my t-mobile f3 :) And just to be clear, the zip flashes an installer which lets you switch between them or is it a one time installer?

The installer doesn't get installed on the phone. It just lets you pick which of the 2 kernels to install.

Yeah I tried it and its really cool how you managed to do that all from recovery :D But can you go from freedom lite to overclock or from overclock to lite using it though?

Yep, you can jump between kernels whenever you want by repeating the same steps. ;)

Keep in mind i'm using a virgin mobile phone:

What's this? If I press volume down & power it goes to factory reset.
If I press volume up & power it displays this:

Emergency Mode!!!
Emergency Mode!!!

Good luck to you!

Don't know, I don't have virgin mobile f3. Plus I've been told by someone that tested it on virgin f3 that it doesn't work properly for that phone hence why it's labeled for metro/t-mo.

Yeah thats what we have to deal with. Power + Volume down factory resets and then goes to recovery so we can't reboot into recovery without having to factory reset. Looks like the problem is actually the kernel and not the phone, I advise switching back to the VM kernel and hopefully it should fix.

It actually does work. I noticed that you can't get into the recovery unless you do a 'reboot recovery' in a terminal app, or use 'adb reboot recovery' from a pc, or use a app that allows you to reboot into recovery. Your xperion rom boots as well. I see you have an option to reboot into recovery in the settings. (looks like the f6 stock rom btw, good work)

So your running freedom kernel and xperion on a Virgin Mobile F3?!

edit: btw thats also the way we get into recovery

btw, with this kernel, and the twrp for this phone, you can boot into recovery without the reset with 'reboot recovery' command.
