Root Root metro PCS GL with kitkat

Ok. So TWRP isnt just for Tmobile. It will work with metro
Correct.

TWRP is similar to CWM to flash roms, backups and the like, I believe.

TWRP is phone specific. So it works with both T Mobile n Metro, Galaxy Lite versions.

Here's the latest version of TWRP for the Galaxy Lite.......

edit... this version will not root your phone. But you could use this to update TWRP after rooting, by flashing in recovery backup.

Tried it but failed. Maybe the last update locked the boot loader.
That's the current theory. Both the Metro and T-Mo versions recently got an update at the same time, despite being on different Android versions. You can use Odin to revert to a previous version and install TWRP. I honestly don't know what this will do to your data or existing apps though.

I just got the phone a couple of days ago and I did the OTA update before rooting.

Root failed for me when I used version 2.8.1.0 of TWRP. It worked with version 2.7.0.0 that ShabbyPenguin is hosting on his site.

Try version 2.7.0.0. Don't forget to tap the 'Build number' several times until developer mode is enabled: Settings->More->About Device->Build Number. As described here by louislee0094: http://androidforums.com/threads/recovery-team-win-recovery-twrp-2-7-0-0.836658/#post-6662171

Myself and one other user on this site have, I know for sure. You'll need a PC. Make sure your computer recognizes your phone first. Just connect it via USB and make sure you can browse files.

We followed the instructions here: http://androidforums.com/galaxy-lig...-win-recovery-twrp-2-7-0-0-a.html#post6492467

I've just purchased this phone and it worked for me first try on;
4.4.2
Build - kot49h.t399nuvuank3
Baseband - t399nuvuank3.
So it should work for anyone else.
All I did was, downloaded the twrp.tar from shabby's post, downloaded odin 3.07 from the odin website, Galaxy Light drivers from Samsung, then after installing what needed to be and such, I put my phone into download mode(vol down, power, home) while not connected to the usb. Opened odin and unchecked auto reboot, clicked PDA and found the twrp.tar I had downloaded from shabbypenguin then connected my phone. Saw that COM was now blue and so I said I quick "gaaahhh I hope this works!!" Then clicked start (perhaps that's the step you missed? You gotta say a little silent prayer generally while rooting) it took about ten seconds tops then said the words RESET. I waited to see if that meant the phone was going to reset and continue with the process since it seemed way too short but after about a minute I decided to pull the battery like the instructions said and put it back in and connected the device again and after booting with vol up, home, and power I was incredibly happy to see the word PASS. YaHoo!

Well there ya go, word for word instructions for those that may need them.
Considering this phones $30 right now I sense a lot of traffic coming this way in the future.

Sidenote THANK YOU SHABBYPENGUIN AND TWRP GUYS!! It's amazing how weird it feels to go from a rooted, barebones stripped down phone to a bloated down device. Thank goodness for the ability to root this phone!

^^Marcusrav, I have done it as well, it was not that hard at all (MUCH easier than some other PITA phones I have done). You just download all the files needed, run the .EXE on your computer, select the right settings and hit GO. Afterwards you just need to use the recovery to push the SuperSU app (SuperUser would probably work as well but SuperSU works for sure) and you are good to go. You dont need to mess with disabling the KNOX program (at least I didnt) as I dont think the Metro GL comes with it.

The ONLY things that could mess you up would be to make SURE you have enabled "USB debug," which just involves going to the "phone status" and hitting the "build" area (I guess you would call it) like 7 times to enable the developer options and then going into that and enabling USB debugging.
when I had supersu installed and tried to run a script it wouldn't run due to improper rooting and busybox would not install properly. switching to superuser solved this problem

Hello all. Sorry to bother but I've read a few posts and still am not really sure about how to root my Samsung Galaxy Light from Metro PCS. If anyone could maybe give me step by step instructions of what I need to do with all download links as well, it'd be highly appreciative.
I can view files on my phone on my computer and through my phone with es file explorer. So I think I have at least one part covered. Lol. Well thank you in advance.

What build is the update? I bought mine in Dec. And can verify or debunk that theory based on if I have the newest version and rooted with twrp.

I successfully rooted the phone and now have superuser access. I am still on the stock rom, but I'm going to download a Cyanogenmod rom, right after I use Flashify with TWRP :)

I don't know if there is a CM ROM for our phone... Only that lightwave ROM or w.e so be careful otherwise youll brink your phone. As far as what you can do now, you pretty much can do anything. You can now remove systen apps, convert user apps to system apps so they remain if you factory reset, block ads, change themes, icons, use xposed or tasker to do all kinds of things, use custom Roms, tweak things like audio profiles to boost volume and such, use apps the require root like lucky patcher, game hacker, rom toolbox, etc, and one of the most crucial things to me anyway with this phone is the ability to let apps use your SD card which was disabled oddly on the KitKat ROM which is annoying as hell. This is no where near a conplete list of what root access allows you to do. Just look around, search what you'd like to tweak and you'll likely be able to do it now, except over clocking and some other things which require a custom kernel which the galaxy light doesnt have :/
