Thoughts on the s5

steveohim

Newbie
I got this phone based on my s3 which I loved, but this has turned out to be the worst phone I've ever had, it's buggy, crashes constantly. Even after me factory resetting the phone, the play store just won't download stuff have the time, and that's when it's not crashing, it freezes all the time.
Is there nothing I can do with it?

It might help if you posted which model of Galaxy S5 you have and your current firmware details, as per #1.2 and #1.8 of 35 Galaxy S5 models - know yours???

As for what you can do with it... see the suggestions in posts #1 and #2 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide... it applies to KitKat firmware as well.

This is my device

That does not show your CSC code as per #1.8 of 35 Galaxy S5 models - know yours???...

#1.8. Your FIRMWARE

To locate your current firmware version, (not baseband/modem), go to the dial pad and type in...

*#1234#

This will give you your, "Version", details in full, usually 3 lines of information which are all relevant. The important one to note in this case is the first, "AP:", (a.k.a PDA), detail. This is important because, as previously mentioned, some models have had a number of updates and improvements to their original firmware.***

Example:-

AP: G900FXXU1BOA3 (Model Build no: see #1.9 )
CP: G900FXXU1BOA2 (Model Baseband/modem/radio build may not always match Build no: above)
CSC: G900FOXA1BOA4 (Model CSC code Build)

*** If code *#1234# has been disabled on your firmware, you can download and install, free from the Play Store, Phone Info and it will give you, under Firmware Info... PDA, Baseband, CSC, versions.

The CSC, (Customer Software Customisation), code, which dictates the customisations for your location/region/carrier. The 3 letter code comes directly after the model version shown in #1.2 above.

Therefore, it is always useful to ascertain the model of phone and firmware as some problems may only occur with certain models or versions of firmware and may not apply across the board to all Samsung Galaxy S5 models and firmwares. Also, a firmware update may have been released that corrects a problem.

Tip: It is a good idea to make a note of your full firmware details in case you ever need to manually re-install your firmware without voiding your warranty.

Any good?

That's exactly the firmware that I am currently on! :)

IMHO, it is by far the best Lollipop release so far. Apart from the Mute toggle and screen pinning, Samsung have obviously done some work under the hood, so to speak. I am finding this latest release very fast and smooth with no lags at all. Particularly so since it does not come with any carrier bloatware whatsoever.

App constantly crashing, freezing etc just generally laggy

Am I right in thinking that your phone came with O2 firmware, originally, and that you had an abortive attempt at rooting it a few days ago and flashed the generic firmware for the UK, yesterday?

Yes I bought the phone second hand already unlocked

OK. The problem with a second hand/pre owned phone is that you do not know what has gone on with it before in terms of rooting, flashing, water damage or even repairs. Therefore, it is always a good idea to do a Full Wipe of both the phone, its internal and external storage, (as per #2.3 & #2.4 of the S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide), to ensure a clean start. You should Factory Data Reset the phone and then download and flash, via Odin, the stock Samsung firmware for your model. Then, as per #2.5 of the aforementioned guide, prior to loading any user apps or settings, check the phone's operation out thoroughly to see if you are experiencing any of the issues that you were previously. If you are, then there could be a problem with the handset itself. If not, then redownload your apps but not the settings. Far better to re-do your settings afresh. The same applies to your storage. Check that all apps and games are Lollipop compatible... some are not inspite of 9 months warning to app developers. Keep checking your phone as you go, to see if at any stage your issues return. This will help you find the problem.

Bare with me....

Hardware and Design -
I've been around the block with smartphones since 2011, Windows OS, then Android, then temporarily to an iPhone (never again) I've always favoured Samsung devices, I like TouchWiz, plastic chassis don't bother me at all and always enjoyed the experience of the devices. My first smart phone was a Samsung Omnia 7, since then I've had numerous S2'S, S3'S, S4'S, Note 3 and now S5, When I saw the launch of the S5 I wasn't impressed the perferated back didn't appeal to me and all round I disliked the device. Since I've had the S5 that view has changed, I like the back, the camera is superb, IP67 is a bonus, the USB flap is practical in my opinion as in it stops little bits of shit getting into the port and causing faults, the fact I have to remove the flap to charge it also doesn't phase me as I find it is like a little ritual that I enjoy as sad as that sounds. It's a bit on the light side, aluminum edges would have been better suited. Battery for me since I've had a mess around with a few things is quite decent, 2800 mAH compared to the 2600 mAH on the S4 isn't a great deal but it's an improvement as although the pixel density is increased its still 1920 x 1080 so it does its job for me. Screen to Bezel ratio was a step backwards also but they had to compensate for something I've read not sure exactly but still it resembles a Note 2 in that sense chunky (ish) sides but I can live with that. Performance and Speed is sufficient for me after a reset and cache clearing and refraining from downloading apps like Facebook etc which I will no doubt download at some point in the near future but never the less 2.5 ghz is a decent improvement from 1.9ghz the S4 offered, RAM should and could've been increased but hey beats the 1GB the iPhone users have ! I have the Shimmery White model and it's fares well to prevent dust gathering on areas, I'm yet to be tested with water spillages or rain but I'm sure it'll hold up. The camera for me is immense, took some snaps at night and they come out pretty great, all round performance is excellent for me and 4k recording is a bonus although 4k viewing isn't supported but never mind , front facing is acceptable but perhaps a 2.5 or 3.0 would have been better for apps like Snap chat and for Instagram posts, Something Samsung took note of with the S6 and A5 ! The Super AMOLED screen for me is superb as always from Samsung bright colours, sharp images and text. I've found there's a lot less bloat ware, compared to apps pre installed on earlier devices, just a press away hidden in the settings menu on the app drawer as Galaxy Essentials which is a cool touch, something that'd always favoured me towards android from the go is Choice and Freedom compared to Apple. I do like the Recent apps Capacitive button which has replaced the Settings or Menu key, I never hardly used that button anyway ! I've heard bad things about position of the speaker and sound performance but for me the sound is more than adequate, volumes are pretty loud and gives off great sound that kind of vibrates the back cover when at max volume, I would much rather my device to be mega loud than too quiet. The messaging experience has changed for me for the better all those dark backgrounds and blue hints are a good riddance with the white and bright colours greatly appreciated and all round TouchWiz has become more customisable with certain elements which I do like a lot. So....If you've read this far thanks ! I really do like the S5, I know as consumers we want what we ask for but this isn't a bad device in my eyes, opinions are what they are but I don't think the phone deserves bad credit, it's an improvement from the S4 although the S4 was the pinnacle of the Galaxy Serise for me But still it has better specs, higher PPI, IP67 certified etc But maybe I'm trying too hard to put up a fight for it.

you pretty much said what I feel about the S5.
I don't like Lollipop software, and won't be installing it.

I like dark colored backgrounds, less battery draw, and easier on my eyes.

I too started with smartphones back in 2008, so a bit longer than you have. But, pretty much a parallel experience and opinions.
