Droid reached over 140*F

I left the Droid in my Jeep this morning when I got to work and didn't think to go get it until now. I wasn't really thinking and the black Droid was sitting in the windshield mount in direct sunlight. It's probably about 75-80* out now. When I took it out, it was very hot to the touch, almost to the point where it hurt to hold on to it. I was going to check my email before I realized how hot it was, so I decided to check the 'set cpu' widget for the processor temp. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but it was showing around 145*F! I immediately turned the phone off and it's been sitting in my desk drawer cooling off for about 10 minutes or so. It's completely cooled down so I'm going to turn it back on and see what's up.

Think any damage could have come from this? I know people get scared when their temps get up to 120*, so I'm hoping nothing got fried. ​

Sooooo I just turned it back on. M comes up, Droid eye comes up, home screen comes up all fine. Shows that I have a new email in the task bar, widgets come up on the home screen, battery life shows 70%. Then before I can do anything, the phone shuts off. It's happened 3 times so far. The 4th time, I could scroll through the pages a few times, saw that the processor is back down to 93*F, but then it shut off. I guess these are reboots because it comes back on a few seconds after it turns off.

I'm not liking where this is going. What are the symptoms of a fried CPU?

CPU is fine. It's not particularly good for the battery to be hot for long periods of time but the battery may not have been anywhere near that temperature. 145F might seem hot to you but for a multiprocessor it's really not that big of a deal.

Mine would always get hot with navigation on and it's hard to avoid direct sunlight in southern california. I just changed the charging profile to lower the clock speed to 800 which keeps the temperature down.

EDIT: You posted about the problems when I was writing. Did you just pull the battery to shut it down or shut it down normally? I still don't think there was any damage to the CPU.

Wow, that is pretty hot. The hottest I've gotten is about 50c, which was in my GPS holder in the car (GPS + Navigation + sunlight = hot).

I'm not sure about symptoms, but try a battery pull. Maybe just leave it off until completely cool to touch.

if the CPU was cooked, it wouldn't even crank up.

As I understand it, the max CPU temp is 105C (221F), but it shouldn't be kept above 70C (158F) for long periods of time. The battery is rated at 60C (right at 140F). So you're very likely fine. At worst, you might need a new battery.

Didn't initially pull the battery, just shut it off manually. When I turned it back on, it was fully cool, I had it in my cool metal desk. Right now I have the battery out of it and both are just chilling for now. Battery is completely cool though, no hint of warmth. Thought about putting it in the fridge lol.

Is it able to successfully mount the SD card before it restarts?

crank the AC and hold it in front of the vent. my droid blows kisses to me when i do that.

I think so, it shows the little SD card in the notification bar and then goes away.

So is it consistently doing this now? Phone is essentially non-functional?

Just put the battery back in. Everything seems to be working fine now. CPU temp is back at 86*F.
