Help Run my tablet on native android?

Hello,
My tablet runs on android 4.2.2 under the OEM layer.
I read that more recent versions of android use less resources and are more efficient.
The OEM layer does not permit upgrades to the android version.
Is it possible and viable and sensible to replace the current image with a more recent android version and run the tablet without the OEM layer?
If yes, how do I do it?

android builds are incredibly device specific.. so there isn't a generic image that you could use on your device.

There are alternative builds of android that are available for certain devices, but without knowing what you have its impossible to even suggest any.
