Froyo, apps, and my thoughts on iPhone OS v Android.

Preface and Gaining Steam

I love my hero(Currently running Damageless 2.08.1 w/ LWP) much as the next guy, and I know Android is getting better and better, see above. One of the age old arguments is that the App Store is light-years, well atleast a few AUs, beyond that of the Android Market.

Frozen Yogurt is twice as good as refrigerated

So, Froyo could mean the difference between day and night or it could also mean the difference from red to a slightly less red. We don't know yet of course, but I have reason to suspect once we have it running smoothly on our devices it would be like a breath of air. We will be sure all to enjoy the ability to start from scratch building the devices from the ground up, Wifi and Usb tethering, full flash support, and (reason of this writing is) Apps2sd.

Android Market

Please whoever is making the Touch this girls leg apps please stop. Having said that, I know you can make some money and I KNOW that people will download them. If I knew how to program I would do the same. After that admission I would like to say our 50,000 apps are somewhat junky and look similar to early iPhone OS app store. We are better than this guys.

Why Apps2SD will be a Godsend for the Android Market

I also have an iPod Touch and got on a little downloading binge tonight. Among my numerous downloads were Scrabble, Bloons TD, and a zombie game. I looked at them and thought to myself, wow that is around 50 MB, my hero would be screaming at me "there is not enough space for this download". Apps2SD natively will give developers the ability for apps that are larger in size for more levels and high-res textures.

Important going forward as a platform and user

We will need Ideas. We will need Innovation. One thing that other platforms do not have is the open source nature of Android. There are some amazing things that some have gone and done before that are sitting the Market right now. And I also want to go further and point out that some of these apps are going to be expensive, but these are game changing pieces of software. They will change how you use your phone. And they are pennies on the dollar vs what they are truly worth.

Future so bright I have to wear...

Shades. I have a dream. One day I see myself playing Mancala cross-platform against my friend who has an iPhone and maybe, just maybe the devision between us won't be so hostile.

but... awesomecomb, you have a link to "Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ Features Apps2SD" - but the link doesn't mention apps2sd - it talks about tethering and mifi/wifi-hotspot (cool news to be sure but... not apps2sd!)

hopefully the hero will get froyo but then again knowing sprint, we probably wont get it until the next big thing is out. not trying to be negative but just realistic but hopefully we get it soon since we'll *get* the 2.1 update eventually

ya.. that's a really good point

only reason i'm interested in the progression of android is for my "next" phone - i've just about written off any improvements or upgrades for my hero past 2.1 - i'd "like" to see 2.1 (eventually) but i'm getting frustrated, discouraged and jaded over the pace (lack thereof?) of releases

I agree 100%. This is more of a platform going forward type deal. I am hoping that Apple will atleast set the precedent to have phones that get 24 months of updates. That would atleast mean 2.2 for G1 owners I think.

Even if Sprint decides not to release 2.2 for the Hero, I am just going to guess here that the homebrew dev community will take care of it for us. I for one look forward to the "blazing fast" 2.2 and I haven't even gotten 2.1 yet. Lol!

I don't think that we'll be seeing Froyo, sad to say although the Hero is the awesomeness it's getting a little dated. Looks like the Hummingbird and Snapdragon processors are becoming the norm (for now at least) for new Android phones. This is the pitfall of technology, it has a limited shelf life, pretty soon my phone and my laptop will be considered 'obsolete' and I'll have to go get new ones again.
