Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 has the following message:
Could not do normal boot.
Ddi : mmc_read failed
Product name: SM-T320
Etc.etc. ..........
UDC Start

Droid Icon center on screen and has "Downloading… Do not turn off target!!" below it.

It has been hours. What should I do? Wait forever? What if I try to reboot?

Since you're up and running normally again this is after-the-fact and mostly out of curiosity but were you actually attempting to do some kind of maintenance/administrative task in particular or did this just happen spontaneously?

t would be odd if your Tab started up in its Download Mode on its own. typically you need to start it up while simultaneously holding down the Volume Down, the Home, and the Power buttons. See below:

Yeah really why would they tampered with that stuff?

In my case the tablet rebooted normally. I believe I lost power and received the message before it really started the downloading process (I had started charging the tablet due to low battery and soon afterward switched power strip the charger was plugged in right before I noticed the message on the screen). I wasn't doing any downloading/upgrading. Samsung never provided any upgrade to this tablet. It still runs android 4.4.2; most current apps won't even install on this tablet.

As long as it's running OK now perhaps that was just some odd, one-off glitch that prompted it to boot up into its Download Mode. Just be sure if there's anything saved on it that you've got all your data safely backed up in case there is some underlying problem.
Download Mode is typically something that's needed for a specific task, but it is a common issue for a Samsung device to reboot itself into its Download Mode when the Android OS gets corrupted in some way. But again, it could have been just a one time thing. If it does happen again though, that does indicate a problem.

You experts are so right. It booted into download mode repeatedly this morning. Was able to boot normally just now and had it all backed up. Waiting for the worst (hardware problem?).
Will flashing a new ROM help? Does anyone know of a link that has detail instructions to root the tablet and flash a ROM?

Well, flashing the ROM will fix an issue if the operating system is corrupt. But if it's a hardware problem, time to start shopping around for a replacement.

But to flash a stock ROM go here and select the ROM that matches your country and carrier:

Be sure to select the appropriate one, ROMs are not interchangeable
For detailed instructions on the process go here:

This process does involve using a Windows PC.
