Can you check if an email is registered to a site without it saining an email to that address?

You obviously think he's up to something shady/illegal/immoral (delete as appropriate), so you probably have an idea as to what site(s) may be involved. There's very little you can do that's not illegal (and might involve jail time if caught). even trying to log in as him without his knowledge or permission is illegal (and leaves traces on a phone or computer that a forensic investigator would easily find.) And I'm most definitely NOT advocating that you do anything illegal.

I doubt it's possible to answer reliably since there's no reason why all sites have to be the same.

But in general, barring illegal measures, probably not. You could probably find out that they haven't got an account by using the "forgotten password" feature, since if the email address isn't recognised that will confirm that they don't have an account with the site using that email address. Of course if they use a different email address that you don't know about this would be a false reassurance. But if they do have an account using that address then they'll know that someone was snooping or trying to hack it.

So really, probably not.

I would think someone would use a new email address / account, or an alias of their existing email account if they wanted to hide something; though I think a reply to an alias name on an existing email account would appear in the same inbox if memory serves * so a disposable alias name only helps protect your identity from the site.

Normies don't think like that. You and I are geeks, we wouldn't be here otherwise, but I can't even talk people into encrypting their mail. They're so proud to have learned how to click the clicky thing or touch the touchy thing that they're perfectly okay with telling strangers their innermost secrets.

You're confusing me with someone that generally knows what they're talking about, but thanks! :D
