Buy online or at local best buy? And billing...

I want to get my droid already, but i'm still in a contract with AT&T unfortunately until July 11th, which is killing me.

Anyway, I was wondering if buying the phone online would be a feasible option. How does the billing work if I have not received my phone yet? I plan on joining my cousin to make a family plan. He got his droid a couple of days ago and is currently on an individual plan. If I order online, when does billing start? Will I need to have the account owner's info if I try?

Is there tax if I buy online (i'm located in California)? If not, it gives me more of an incentive to buy online. I can probably try to get one when a local best buy restocks, but when my cousin bought his, it was 40$ tax.

I would talk to a verizon CSR but I'm pretty sure you'll only have to pay for the phone up front. Then, depending when you activate it, the billing will start. I'm almost positive you will need your cousin's account info.

I bought mine last week online and yes, there is tax (I'm also in CA). They actually charge you tax on the retail cost of the phone so it ends up being almost $50 if I remember correctly. I was a little pissed about this because it waits for the very last step in the purchase process to tell you about the $50 tax.

I know man same thing happened to me I was chatting with a VZW rep and that was almost a deal breaker until I googled verizon online promo codes and got a 30% off code.

Since VZW has a physical presence in CA, they are required to collect sales tax for online orders as well. Even Amazon, which many tout as being tax-free, collects sales tax on items shipped to the handful of states where they have a footprint. And, as you probably know, CA taxes the full retail value of the phone, regardless of how much it's subsidized or discounted. In essence, many people end up paying more for sales tax than they do the phone.

As for billing, you wouldn't pay for service until the phone is activated.
