Workaround for screen shutdown when making calls?

One thing I really dislike on Eris is that when making phone calls, if I have to go back to enter additional numerals for extension, redirect, etc., I have to pull the phone away from my ear, reactivate the screen, and re-activate the keyboard before I can enter the numbers. If I used a bluetooth earpiece I know it would be simpler, but even though I have an earpiece, I don't like it.

When I had the HTC TP2, there was a workaround, which would keep the keyboard active and screen on during the call, so it would be ready to use immediately.

Is there anything comparable on Eris?

As you probably already know, the Eris has a proximity detector that sensed when the phone is close to your ear during a call. That will shut off the screen so that your ear or the side of your face doesn't activate any buttons on the screen (such as "End Call", Mute or Speaker)
If I need numbers I do have to activate the keyboard. But when I take the phone from my ear the screen automatically comes back on with the keyboard visible (if I turned it on).
I don't know why you have to manually turn on the screen and reactivate the keyboard.

I'm sorry, I think I didn't explain my question very well.

I don't have to manually turn on the screen, you're absolutely right. But when I take the phone away from my ear, there's still a lag of about 2 seconds before the screen re-starts. And yes, the keyboard, once opened, will come back when the screen re-starts.

It's the lag that drives me nuts (granted, it's a short drive).

IIRC, there was a way to override this in the TP2, so we're probably talking about inactivating the proximity sensor. Most folks might not want to do this, but I had no problems after the sensor was shut off. And it was a pretty simple fix. I'm thinking it might be a similar fix in the Eris as the TP2.

Does anyone know how to do this?
