Root Need Help with Rooting My Droid! This is ridiculous!

Ok, so this is going to seem really stupid to a lot of you, but I feel like trying to root my Droid is going to be the death of me. Spent 4 hours last night and got no where. FAST! Monkey 0 Football 14.
Ok before I explain my problem and steps I took, first let me tell you my set up. HP Desktop Running Win7-64. DroidA855 running 2.1.
I followed all of the steps listed in several different articles. I installed the drivers(4.2) then RSD lite(4.6). Got my phone to bootloader, and it shows up in RSD lite. Try to upload the new SBF file. I get the typical error of not being to write to blah blah blah.... some code ending in 000007. OK No big deal. Try rebooting CPU and start over. Now RSD lite wont even see my phone when its in bootloader. I unistalled the drivers, CC cleaned the registries, updated drivers to 4.5 and 4.6, each time clearing out old drivers and rebooting and CC cleaning. Changed versions of RSD lite. tried combos of all of that.
Nothing. A hundred reboots and everything i can think of. Ive been to twenty differerent links where everyone has a "sure-fire" "fool-proof" way to make it work. Right... Easier said than done. I ve done everything I can think of. I made sure that the device manager reads the phone as Moto blah blah and not Android blah blah.
When I hook up the phone when on and mount it, it shows just the SD card in My Computer, and in devices, it shows A855 as a hard drive.
I really wanted this to work. I dont understand why it wont. I dont get it. So I feel like a dumbass for getting stuck like this. But hey.... i know when to ask for directions when Im lost and running out of gas.
I think i Know what to do once RSD lite will recognize the phone. But I need help getting it to recognize it. Right now RSD lite looks the same in all the fields whether the phone is plugged in and on bootloader or completely unplugged.
Anything that you can do to provide me the chance to join the Froyo club would be appreciated.
Oh, as to other posts I have seen about trying a non-Win7 cpu... its not an option for me. Both my CPU's are running win7-64.
HELP!!!! Please!!!!
Oh, if there is anyone in Charleston, SC feeling really helpful, maybe you could show me how to do this. That would be sweet. Since evidently, I am ****** of the highest order!

Do you have USB debugging mode enabled?
Are you mounting then unmounting the SD Card?

This has a few things that seem slightly different than the others. but for the most part, Ive run through all those beginning steps.
Im sure It would be fine the rest of the way, just have to get RSD to recognize the phone!

yes, i have usb debugging enabled and the sd card is mounted.

The slightly different things might be the fix for your problems.

Of course, they might not - I'd try it regardless.

are you running RSD Lite as Admin?

rsd lite is a pain in the but to get working in win7 64 bit. Be 100% sure you are running it as admin or it wont work. It works fine on my w7 64b machine but others have had lots of problems.

Also many people have luck moving the sbf file to the root of their C Drive.

im 95% sure im running it is as admin, but i will go into the c: drive and right click it from the folder and make sure that way as well. if it really is something that simple... im gonna feel like a ****. at this point id try just about anything short of switching to an iphone.

if you would try anything then find someone with an xp machine and use it. Not hard at all to get working on XP.

Your SD card should not be mounted when you're in RSD lite. Make sure you're booting into recovery after you have connected the phone, without mounting the SD card...

you want to boot into the bootloader not recovery for RSD. If you arent booting to the bootloader then that is the problem. To get to the boot loader hold up on the dpad while turning on the phone

Long time reader, first time poster here.

I have been rooting/overclocking Droids (Moto and Eris) since January and have ended up helping about 13 people I work with root and then customize their droids to have some of the awesomeness that is non-stock. I have used every method for rooting the different versions, but the RSD Lite to SPR2.1 is very easy. My advice:

Install motorola drivers first, place .sbf file on root of C drive, then install RSD Lite, then connect phone by data cable. RSD Lite installs well but can be tricky with Win7 to get it to use administrator privileges, needing 3 additional clicks on setup depending on security level. If installed, click the ... button and select the correct sbf file, then turn off phone and hold up on Dpad to get it into bootloader mode. Click start in RSD Lite and you're usually done in less than 2 minutes, disconnect phone, power off phone and then hold X and power button until the motorola logo appears and everything should be fine if it boots into SPRecovery.

I'm still in reading/learning mode.....watched various YouTube videos and how-tos. I thought your step by step is the clearest yet. I've been confused about where files should be DL'd (phone or computer) and you've been clear on that. Thanks.
