Orientation / Accelerometer Problems

guys i came from a storm and this bugged the piss out of me. every time you took the phone out of your pocket/holster to answer a call it would be in landscape mode. anyway, when i went to vzw on friday i checked this as soon as i touched my phone. the screen doesn't rotate unless the keyboard is open on the home screen. it does rotate when you're in an app though. hope this helps.

Almost returned the phone for this reason, as I had tried two Storms (first didn't change orientation unless I shook it really hard while in horizontal position). Relieved that everyone seems to have a similar issue. As a prior Storm user (twice), I wish that the Droid did turn to landscape when in Home screen mode.

You say that so "matter-of-fact". The reason this thread is growing so fast is because some of us (refer to pics above) can do it... and others can't.

Rotation is busted on the home screen, same in apps. Always in landscape mode unless I just opened and shut the keyboard. Tilting to horizontal instantly returns to landscape. Switching applications returns to landscape.

The only way to get "temporary" portrait mode is to click open and shut the keyboard.

Sound and Display Settings -> Orientation is enabled.

I think it worked this morning, I did use the car mount today. Can't remember exactly when it stopped working, so this may be a red herring.

Update: removing/replacing battery restored rotation for everything except the home page. Can't honestly remember if the home page ever rotated, but at least the rest of the phone is doing what I expect.

Yeah? You should listen to your own words. The home screen doesn't rotate to landscape. I don't care if someone posted a picture, you can fake that easilly if it's taken at the right time. Until someone posts a video, everyone here who's saying "oh noes it used to work!" is wrong in my opinion.

EDIT: I see it was you that did it. Post up a video man? We're all waiting.

lol No offense, but it's just not worth it anymore. I'm not the only one that has seen it. That's good enough for me. Digging out a camcorder and going through all of the effort to make and upload the video for the sole purpose of arguing with people is pointless. :) You can say I faked the picture if you want... I'll have the last laugh. Why? Because my home screen rotates and yours doesn't.

PS - Just curious... (not hostile tone... serious question) How stupid do you really think someone would have to be to come on a forum with hundreds or thousands of fellow droid owners and fake a picture to back up a claim the phone would do something?

My DROID no longer automatically reorients the screen on any application. The only way it will rotate the screen is if I slide the keyboard out - for anything. So using the soft keyboard in a landscape mode becomes a moot point.

Plus, sometimes it doesn't rotate the screen back to portrait after I slide the keyboard closed. It worked like a charm the first day.

Are you sure your settings are right?

I am having the same issue; no home screen or quick search auto-orientation. It also does not switch on the lock screen and contacts list; it does switch when viewing individual contacts. Having to open the phone to get the onscreen landscape keyboard to show up is not a design feature... it would be a flaw if anything. Also it was working when I first got the phone and now it's not.
Has anyone contacted Motorola or Verizon to see if they are aware of the issue? Or maybe found an advanced settings menu?

I put a magnet on the back of the phone to make it go into car mode and while in car mode it the home screens work in landscape.......so maybe we just need to wait for someone to come out with a car mode emulator or whatever it might be called.

at least by using a magnet it proves the phone can do it, it just choses not to unless it's in car mode.

I suspect this because I've done this and the timing seems to have coincided, also I notice that the photo of the original behavior has the original wallpaper.

I changed mine with Backgrounds (stylem Media, apps@stylem.com).

FWIW: I remember my home screen orienting to landscape when I turned the phone. It no longer does.

This is not a case of mass-histeria. I did not machinate a home/landscape rotation memory after reading this thread. I found this thread via a search for "accelerometer" when looking for a solution.

I wonder if one of the apps I loaded has caused this behavior. My apps are (as reported by Apps Organizer):
