Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

Mmm.. Someone just tweeted that the Orange update 2.73.61.66 may include the stuff in this prelim update, and so Orange may not push this OTA update.

Of course if this is true, it would mean that we all need to do the .66 update before the 2.1 OTA will work..

I've not done the .66 update yet, so I'll wait to hear if the 2.1 update starts landing on Orange branded phones and then do it all on the same day to save rebuilding the phone twice, but its an interesting theory.

I rang HTC yesterday and they said if you cancel the first update then it may take up to 14 days for the phone to find it again!

Thats why some people are having luck with switching dates forward, my lil sisters having trouble with orange updates. She was advised to wipe and download from htc website by orange, dunno if this helps or not. She still hasnt built up big enough cahonas to wipe yet though lol

Can someone just confirm something for me please
Now I've had the message about the update which I downloaded, then pressed the install button. The phone went off the turned itself back on and it just sat there with the HERO screen and nothing else.
After half an hour I phoned the help line. after a 20 minute wait I explained what had happend.
I was told to take the battery out and the turn it back on. When it had rebooted I was asked for the build number which was 2.73.405.5...... . I was told that that was the correct number after the first up date.
Now this is what I would like to confirm. I thought this was the build number before the update, am I correct?

No problems here getting the "pre-update" by setting it a year into the future. german non-branded hero.

but a question: a friend of mine bought his hero during a visit to singapore. he had no luck so far getting the update and some people at htc told him he needs to get it somehow through singapore. what's the deal with this? it's non-branded as far as i know, but is there some kind of locale fingerprint on the phone hardware?

Hello, it's my first post here :)

OK, everybody already knows European Heroes getting their minor update. But I have a question. I live in Poland and I got my Hero as a gift from abroad.

My Hero's build number is kind of weird "2.73.421.5 14733 CL#61267" and from what I researched it's dedicated to South Africa's market, but works great with Polish networks.

I have question does anybody know when will the minor update show up for this one? The changing date trick doesn't work and I tried changing up to a year (cale sync and date network sync is turned off, so it's not setting the date to current one) but no worked.

Please I need some info about it

Sorry for adding more confusion to the pot about all these release dates but just mailed HTC this morning and got this reply.
Hey,
I have a Hero and I'm trying to update the handset to the pre 2.1 FOTA update. Some say a notification will pop up, others say changing the date to a future date will kick it off and others have stated it can be prompted by going into 'menu' then 'About phone' and selecting the 'upgrade software' option (which does not exist).
Can you advise because I want to be ready for the full 2.1 update?

Many thanks.

Rich.

Your phone checks every 2 weeks, it would seem. That's how you get the automatic notifications. But if you skip your phone's clock ahead it will make it check again.

The upgrade software option only appears if you already have the first OTA update. Once you have it, I think it makes the Hero check for the second OTA update, without having to change the date.

Yes, you get a new option in the settings "About phone" / "System software update". There you can mark a checkbox "Scheduled check | Go online and check for updates according to schedule from server" as well as a button "Check now".
