Google Docs?

Just noticed there's no google docs app, strikes me as weird, considering almost every other google service has an app... anyone know anything on this?

It appears to be exactly what you are looking for.

I didn't even know about google docs until I was poking around adyno forums the other day (another app), and someone had posted a spreadsheet using google docs. I think it would be an amazing app to have, since it is exactly what I would need to solve an issue of my own: the ability to auto sync spreadsheets between my desktop and my cell phone.

I hope it isn't a long wait.

Until we get the official Google Docs, you can download an app call "GDocs" or GDoc" and it works really cool

I'm surprised no one here has mentioned GDocs (http://sites.google.com/site/gdocsforandroid/), a third-party app for offline editing and synchronizing of Google Docs. Although it's more bare-bones (e.g., not only is there no formatting, existing formatting is destroyed) than what I would expect a "full-featured" solution from Google to look like, it does work, and it's free in the Market.

That is often the story on such things, unfortunately.

Try posting it as an idea in the apps section... I could be wrong, but I think it would get a lot of support. Maybe a bored developer would take on the task?

Yeah, it's just a matter of time until Google has a fully syncronized Google Docs app out there (and I can't wait). I hope a fully sycronized cloud "Tasks" app is also in the works.

On my G1 I just had a direct URL link to the mobile version of Google Docs on my desktop so I could click on it to view my documents. But I couldn't edit the documents... it was just for reading. I just downloaded "GDocs" which isn't actually made by Google.. but it allows you to view/edit upload and download Google Documents. It's pretty cool.

there's a free app- gtasks that keeps an on device task list and syncs it to the task list in google calendar. You have to manually sync but it works great. I wish it would sync automatically in the background- but it gets the job done while google twiddles their thumbs.

I can edit mine on the mobile verizon of google docs, but its not the same as having an app... and I really would prefer something official by Google

I just found something that I think will hold me over until google docs has an official release.

It is an app called "thinkfree". It's in the market place. Free download, so its worth checking out.

That is pretty much what "ThinkFree" does... except you don't have to open the browser. Just click the icon and you are there.

Curious - My synchronization of all my data is still on-going and this morning I got to my Google Docs stuff. I have 2 documents migrated over to my gmail account (I had previously used a Google Apps for your Domain account which it doesn't like that much).

So I have 2 documents, shared with my wife for now. All fine. I go to docs.google.com and I can *see* the documents, which is 90% of what I need, but I can NOT however edit them.

If you are able to edit via web browser, I'd like to know what steps you took, as right now, I am stuck. Any help greatly appreciated.

There are links at the beginning of each column with an "edit" link.

At least, that is how it is on mine.

Yeah when you open the doc (spreadsheet in my case) there is an edit link in the far left column, click that and it allows you to edit the whole row.

YES, I've been using gDocs for several weeks - first app I loaded when I got my New HTC Hero. It works great for "textual" material only. It does sync in the http://docs.google.com area of google however it syncs only in "text" as I've mentioned. All MS-WORD, PDF, XL formatting is lost as far as I can tell.

Any other apps to try would be much appreciated.

I'm loving the gdocs notepad for basic text syncing too. Not the most feature rich program but it works.

On advice of some posts in this thread, I just downloaded gdocs via Android Market on my Motorola Droid, and so far it seems working -- you just get plain text on the Droid version of the doc, lots of formatting not there, but it certainly does the basic job ... lets me read Google Docs via my Droid --- and do basic editing as well ...

It does seem something Google would offer itself, but until it does, this 3rd party app will meet my basic needs!

Just read this on the GOOGLE DOCUMENTS FORUM:

A Google employee named Marie posted the following on 12/29/09: "We are aware of an issue where some users are unable to access [Google] docs on their mobile devices. We're aware of this issue and working to resolve it."

FWIW, I know someone who has an advance copy of one of the Nexus One phones (the so-called Google Phone) and they tell me that Google docs is working on their phone.

It just seems so weird to me. I mean it's not like they had to write some kind of crazy from-scratch programming or something. The functionality is already there, they actually had to go out of their way to EXCLUDE the edit functionality. If I can write a new email I could certainly write a new document. Just weird and it really has me off put that I bought a phone for one simple reason (total googlocity) and now I am realizing an iphone would be just as compatible. Really irks me.

And yes there's gdocs. It wipes out all formatting and saves as text only. Know what else does that? Email. I'll just write myself emails.

I find DataViz' programs not very user-friendly. Half the time I can't even figure out how to make them work. And if you get less than the premium edition, they will HOUND you with endless, breathless notices urging and beseeching you to upgrade. Which is very cheesy of them.

About the G docs. When the formatting is 'lost' is it lost for good? Or just not visible on the phone but still lives unchanged when you view it again in the browser?

As far as I can tell, formatting is gone for good after edited in GDocs. For me, that's okay. The only major drawback is not being able to sort the document list alphabetically in GDocs. I have a long list of documents so it's a pain to find the one I want. It could be that I overlooked the sorting function. I have to use two apps: GDocs for editing and ThinkFree for viewing.
