I have not tried ADB on ubuntu but I can surely guide u for Windows.I m using windows 7.
Get ADB Drivers n Android SDK too.u will require JDK(java development kit) for Android SDK.
After installing this all turn on usb debugging on ur phone.
Connect phone with pc n install downloaded driver.
After successful driver installation open Command Prompt n browse to platform-tools folder in Android SDK installation directory.Prompt should look like this:-
C:\Program Files\Android SDK\platform-tools>
Now type "adb devices" without quotes n press enter,a connected device should be shown.If no device listed then just exit command prompt & go to android.pandaapp.com and download 91 PC Suite n install it.
Now keep the phone connected n run 91 PC Suite n it should connect your phone.
Keep that program running(minimize it) n open Command Prompt n again go to platform-tools folder of Android SDK...now type "adb device" n it will show a device connected.done.
