Official GSM Hero 2.1 Thread

oh, sorry for the false alarm guys!

ED: althought i am still surprised that this is not a 'branded' handset. anyway, i shall edit my first post to prevent needless excitement

Where did you get it? If you got it from Carphone Warehouse it will not be branded. If you got it direct from Orange or from an Orange shop then it would have been.

I have an unlocked Here and am not on any major carrier. I am on AMC in Albania. Anyone know if/how I will get the update? I emailed HTC, and they assured me I will get it, but it seems that everyone is getting it through their carrier. I may very well be the only one with this on AMC and have not gotten it yet. How does this work for people like me?

I saw online this morning on the news that it was now released! I got very excited but I still have no idea how we get it! Plus, not sure about the source.

Android 2.1 comes in for HTC Hero | TopNews Singapore

I have an unbranded hero from CPWH. Does anyone know how to get this upgrade? It says that it is over the air. How does that work?

My hero has become so slow that I really want this now! Seems like we all do.....

You only get it from your network if the phone is branded. Heroes sold by Orange/T-Mobile/3 are all branded and run firmware customised by the network.

I don't know if AMC brand their phones, but if you tell us your build number in Settings >> About Phone we can figure it out.

Thanks. It's 2.73.421.5. Also says 146733 CL#61267 release keys. Any help is much appreciated.

Connect the phone to a wifi connection. Then set the date to august 8 or later, so you "force" the phone to check for a new update.

Sorry to quote/bump myself but can someone let me know if this will work please?
I put generic HTC rom, got the updates to 2.1 but wondering if i can stick the 3 rom over the top of 2.1
Thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure if you put the 3 rom back on now, it'll revert the phone back to 1.5. However if you put the Three rom back on when they finally get around to releasing their own version of 2.1, then it will update it for you. But at least you can still run 2.1 between now and then.

P.s. Are you really missing Planet 3 that badly? :)

Thanks for the replies but i am having issues.
I have done a hard reset to clear any things out post FOTA and now, i cannot see to get online at all using mobile settings :( Can do with wi-fi.
Can send/make calls/texts.
Have checked the APN settings and all seem fine but cannot get online. The H is showing the arrows, up and down so summat is connected/ing. Really odd all was fine before i did the hard reset

I had the three app but for what i needed was the same as having a bookmark to three's homepage.

But that's all the Three app is, a link to Planet 3 but with auto WiFi disable thrown in.

Anyways, here's my APN settings after the update so you can compare them to yours:

Name: 3
APN: three.co.uk
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: http://mms.um.three.co.uk:10021/mmsc
MMS Proxy: mms.three.co.uk
MMS Port: 8799
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 234
MNC: 20
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN type: *

Hope this helps

This gets weirder. Part of where i live, i cannot get H signal and it goes to 3G roaming. I have just tried this and 3G works fine, synced, updated, let me into weather, market etc etc.....thoughts anyone?
Whilst to me it could be as simple as the H network could be down and i can fully understand that, seems more than coincidence plus given the H has he up and down arrows confuses me more

Ok, so what have we learned today.
I decided to be a guinea pig and attempted to reload 3 rom onto 2.1
As Moko76 suggested, the 3 rom reverted the f/w to 1.5. No big issue but might be worth noting for others.
So, phone is back on 1.5 and still have the H vs 3G issue around the property. Figure sod it, worst comes to the worst i am back on 1.5 so rang 3's tech support
Yes Slug, 3 are currently doing upgrade work to the network is sunny Manchester lol. Sods Law that the outage occurs exact same time i do the factory reset ;)

So, what to do now? Go back to 2.1, leave at 1.5, have summat to eat, have a nap lol?!

It's been fun going back and forth lol, i think i'll have a rest, leave the phone be for a while and then go back to 2.1 later today and see how the handset performs at work.

Thanks for the advice and like i say, seems if you go from 2.1 to 3's rom your f/w will go back too :)

I just wanted to let you all know that I set my date for 2011 and as promised I was asked to download the 2.1 firmware. I was really nervous but did it anyway. Weird thing is i switched it back on and nothing is missing (I still have all messages, numbers and photos etc). It is so much faster. The internet is faster, the lag has gone and it looks much preetier! I just need to make it look the same as it did before and then we are good. I feel like I have a brand new phone!

Good luck everyone!

After all that happened earlier, i used the old goldcard.img from yesterday went from 3 rom to generic, got the updates to 2.1 and we're back to normal again.
Should have been more patient but it was a worthwhile test.
Took bloody ages to install stuff from market mind. If i install from the Astro backup and goto the market it doesn't recognise them so i'd get no updates for the apps so had to install 30, one by one but done now!

I have a 3 branded Hero updated to 2.1 with an o2 contract sim (goldcard method).

There was always a problem with MMS picture messaging because o2 don't officially support the handset. Pictures would always come through very small. However, this was fixed recently and all was working as it should.

It seems the update has 'broken' this fix again. Pictures coming through tiny again.
