Gmail notification and Lock Screen Timeout on Droid

So I made the switch from the (surprise) iPhone on the day of release to the Moto Droid. I really do like the phone, but there are 2 consistent quirks that I can't find an answer to after searching Google and many many forums.

1. Lock screen timeout. This one really annoys me for some reason (probably just because I feel like it's a waste of battery life). So I have the screen timeout set for 1 minute, so if I have the phone unlocked, and I don't use it for 1 minute then it locks itself (fine, good). BUT, if I have the phone locked, and I just hit the Home/Lock button on the top of the phone to see the lock screen, WHY does the lock screen stay on for the same amount of time (1 minute) before going off again??? If I don't unlock the phone, I just want that screen to turn off quickly, maybe in 5-10 seconds.

2. Gmail notification. I have 2 gmail accounts (1 for school, 1 personal), and it's the only mail I use or have set up on the phone. All I want to have is a notification of gmail in the taskbar so when I hit the Home/Lock button and see the lock screen, I can tell if I have gmail or not. I DON'T want the LED to blink if I don't check or delete the mail (turning LED gmail notification off). (Having the number of mails would be nice too, either in the taskbar or on the home screen, or optimally, both).

ANY help with these two issues would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you in advance.

I think #1 is specifically for the screen timeout, which is what it is doing.

If you press the button and don't see what you want to see, just press it again and it will dim the screen back. It won't power your phone off unless you hold it in. If you do that, you'll see options, and it'll confirm your choice.

Not sure that I can help you with #2... you will see the GMail icon at the top of the screen if you have any new messages, though. I don't think it will give you a number or that there is an option for that.

I know I can hit the button again to dim the screen on the lock screen. But, if you've had an iPhone (I can't speak for other touch screen phones) you would know that the 'screen timeout' and the 'lock screen timeout' are two separate things. When the iPhone is locked and you hit the Home or Power button, the screen lights up, and if you don't do anything, it dims after 5 seconds...that is all I want.

It's been a while since you posted, but this is exactly how my Droid behaves. :)

I hope it was fixed after the updates.

I am wondering about your question #2! I'd like the LED notification for Gmail off and keep the icon in the Notification area only.

Interestingly, my phone does exactly what you want yours to do. I have a 1 minute screen time-out, which works. When my screen is locked and I wake the screen, if I don't enter my password, it sleeps again in about 3 seconds or so. I checked through the menu items and couldn't find this as a setting. What I might suggest is to change your sleep time from 1 min to 30 secs and then back again. Also, it may be as a result of the fact that I use the pattern lock. Try enabling it and see if that fixes your issue.
