Why I am going to pass on FROYO

Hey, this thread has a topic. I know this because the OP conveniently placed said topic in the first post, which is how it normally works. If you do not have something to say related to this topic then please move on to another thread leaving all grilled cheese and cool story bro discussions to their appropriate threads.

What a mod should have done was deleted this thread instead of trying to regulate responses. It is obvious that this thread was created to get a rise out of people and start arguments. Also if the grill cheese had nothing to do with his topic then I guess the word analogy has no definition.

No, you are wrong. OTD is the beezneez. Sorry. This is an open forum. If he doesn't want to accept the OTA update and start a thread discussion, well to, discuss it, then he very well may.

If this is an open forum then why are people's replies being deleted for not agreeing with him? You are the wrong one little buddy, look and see where you are throwing your 2 cents first.

We have a trigger happy mod here with delusions of grandeur who is deleting people's posts for no reason, we aren't in preschool here people are allowed to have conflicting opinions.

Actually, the deleted posts were the ones that were off-topic (there are plenty of people that disagree and still have their posts here). However, you may have shot yourself in the foot. There is a system in place for handling grievances with the way moderators work. You can contact that mod via PM, and if that doesn't work, you can go to an admin. You can also report the mod's post, and all mods/admins with relevant permissions will see it and be able to act on your concerns.

But publicly slamming a mod for doing their duties (for which they volunteer) will only get you an infraction or vacation on most forums.

There is no need to delete a thread with a current and valid topic that has not gone to hell in a hand basket. This thread has not. As far as regulating posts, all I said was that they needed to be on topic. I am not regulating what people say on that topic, besides the occasional offensive remark.

I understand that you are very concerned about your grilled cheese post. While it may have been an analogy, it contained no real discussion point to this thread and was more or less an attempt at a comical flame towards the OP. I felt that it did not belong in the thread with any other serious discussion. If that hurt your feelings, then I apologize.

Open forum refers to the fact that this is a visible part of the forum, which means that everyone can see it. It does not mean that people are allowed to post whatever they want. There are rules and guidelines to the forum. One of which pertains to staying on the original topic of the thread. I did not delete a single post based on the poster's agreeing or disagreeing with the OP. The posts were removed because they contained content meant to either start something or where completely off topic.

As for the rest of your comments, I can only laugh.

As Medion so correctly stated though, if you have a problem with me or my actions you are welcome to discuss those with me via PM as this is not the appropriate place for such things. If you do not wish to discuss them with me, then you are welcome to talk with one of the Admin (Phases or Shivers).

Now, I will remind you to return to the actual topic of this thread. Any further off topic discussion will be deleted.

I have heard of some bugs in the OTA but have read most of the forums and haven't heard of any problems with the RUU updating mainly because the RUU update wipes your phone clean before it starts , eliminating possible bugs .
Over the years most smartphone upgrades always suggested doing a hard reset when changing roms or os's. Always start with a clean slate an you don't have the bugs you can get installing an upgrade over an older system. People could have apps that haven't been upgraded for 2.2 and they could cause problems.
The OTA doesn't wipe your phone clean before it starts the upgrade , thus the chance for bugs.
I flashed the RUU and have no problems with scrolling or anything else. Everything works fine like it is supposed to.

For the non-tech savvy who hasn't yet received the OTA for 2.2, you're saying that the leaked update will wipe your system while the official one won't? (So Ruu stands for is the leaked update?) And that's preferred? And so a hard reset wipes everything off your phone, completely? Like contacts, pictures, texts, etc? But then you probably won't have the bugs people are reporting with the OTA? Sorry for sounding dense, but this is my first smartphone and I'm clueless! :D

I did the manual update from the Official update.zip thread here, and did not have to wipe my phone, not sure about the RUU version, but the update.zip version was really easy.

THE files in the 8/26 RUU are identical to the files in the OTA. When you install a RUU upgrade (the way most update roms are put on smartphones) the RUU update erases the phone before it installs the update , so the update installs on a clean phone. The OTA installs on top of the old OS just overwriting some of the files , so there are apps left on the phone that might not have been upgraded from 2.1 to work on 2.2 , thus possibly causing problems after the update. I have been putting roms and updates on smartphones for almost ten years and the instructions alway suggested a wipe before installation for the best results.
Been hearing of bugs in the phones after some of the OTA installs but not any from the RUU installs. Read the forums. ;)

Thanks for the responses. haha I've been trying to read the forums but terms like RUU and OTA and even update.zip (didn't realize till now they are 3 different installations) took me a while to even understand. lol!

I've been reading random posts saying the update is causing this or that (from earpiece not working to youtube freezing to internet lagging to battery taking forever to charge etc) but it doesn't always say which update they did, when, and if it's been fixed.

I got the OTA late last night but haven't installed it just so I can try to read a little more and understand what I'm doing. I found a helpful post about backing up and learned that using Astro for backing up apps will no longer link you to the Market so you won't get updates (I wouldn've never known and never gotten another update haha).

I found a helpful post about backing up and learned that using Astro for backing up apps will no longer link you to the Market so you won't get updates (I wouldn've never known and never gotten another update haha).

Just to try and help clarify these terms a bit more:

RUU:

Stands for ROM Update Utility. This is a windows executable downloaded to, and ran from, your PC.

What it does is copies Update.zip ( which is contained inside the exe ) to the SD card, Wipes the entire phone and installs Update.zip.

This method is just as automatic as the OTA, but a number of people have driver issues. However, due to the wipe this is the cleanest and smoothest installation.

OTA:

Stands for Over-The-Air. This is where VZW sends out the update to your phone. You receive it over the 3g wireless network: Hence "Over-The-Air".

What it does is Downloads and copies Update.zip to the SD card, and installs the Update.zip without removing anything from your phone.

This method is essentially automatic, and is the least likely to have an issue during the actual install process. However, as this method does not perform a wipe, it leaves a lot to chance regarding various problems. A manual Factory Reset will fix any of these issues, as it will factory reset to a clean install of the update ( In this case, 2.2. So, doing the OTA followed by a full Factory Reset is the same as doing the RUU. )

Manual Update/Update.zip:

Named this because it is the most basic and requires the user actually do the update themselves. This is where you download only the Update.zip automatically used by the other methods.

What it does is after having manually copied the the Update.zip onto the SD Card, you restart the phone and using the Recovery you choose to apply the Update.zip. This will install the Update.zip without removing anything from your phone, just like the OTA.

This method is still mostly automatic, all you really have to do is start it. This method is roughly between the RUU and OTA for issues during the install itself. There are a few things that can cause hiccups, but they are usually less problematic than drivers. However, as this method does not perform a wipe, it leaves a lot to chance regarding various problems. A manual Factory Reset will fix any of these issues, as it will factory reset to a clean install of the update ( In this case, 2.2. So, doing the Manual Update/Update.zip followed by a full Factory Reset is the same as doing the RUU. )

You should have noticed the main similarity between them as well. They ALL use Update.zip which is the file that actually contains the entire update...you just won't see this file when doing the RUU or OTA normally. This is partly how it is known that the RUU, OTA, and Update.zip are all identical. Besides this, the RUU is also a signed ( IE: Legitimate and verified ) file. The Update.zip was actually obtained from the RUU and OTA themselves. Finally: The versions of everything match exactly with each other, as well as the listed builds on the Verizon support site.

Hopefully that cleared up any question about the 3 methods for anyone:)

As everyone waits to install the OTA or thinks about putting on the leak, I have decided not to install it when it comes to my phone for the following reasons

1) No new bluetooth drivers
2) Battery life doesn't seem to be improved
3) Several reports of the phone lagging and just not working after installing it resulting in the need for a factory reset. Ill pass on a reset thank you.
4) Reports of HTC sense issues still with FROYO

Hopefully there will be a second release that fixes the bugs, then ill install it, or wait for 3.0, which is due out in January.

I would expect better from you, AI:

1) No comment on bluetooth, since I do not use it and people that have the earpieces hanging off their ears and talking loudly pi55 me off.

2) Battery life is better, but still again if people use social apps, live widgets, 3G, wifi, gps- what does anyone expect?

3) No lag here, since I start clean when installing a new OS update. People having issues probably have app resource hogs and installed 2.1 over 2.2. Too dramatic of an OS change to assume it wil be clean for everyone.

4. What issues with Sense?

I have used Skyraider 2.52 Sense and Stock 2.2- none of the issues you articulate here (sans the Bluetooth issue). No comparison in performance. Much better with 2.2.

Your loss (but respect your view), but at least a lot of the Galaxy S owners on four different carriers will be with you ;)

BTW, earlier in the thread you mention you reset your phone, but you imply in the OP that you did not install 2.2 yet... How do you know if it will work or not in that case? Seems you have come to the conclusions of others who may have just installed over 2.2.

added:

Yep, goobers that walk around with the bluetooth earpieces, talking out loud really piss me off (I did not bother with the "55" that time).

K. Makes room for someone else to get the update sooner.:D

The thing that makes me think there won't be anymore updates for this.

I had a moto droid and Eris, and I got the OTA 2.1 for both of them.

Like the Incredible the Moto Droid, used to say 2.1update1.
The droid Eris said 2.1

The two phones that were labled 2.1update1, got another update.
the eris that says 2.1, isnt getting anymore updates.

it just leads me to believe that it would say 2.2update1 if we were getting anymore updates.

just my two cents take it for what it's worth.

Update.1 for 2.2 will more than likely be patches for small issues, not the end of future updates, and if so, there is always root. I believe 2.2 is running on G1's just fine.

By the way, I saw mention of using custom ROMs or leaked OTA Updates being the source of earlier said problems, but I'm using one from XDA and it's working great! I use a task manager to monitor running applications and 2.2 seems to be managing them Much better than 2.1, as in apps aren't just running randomly on their own. Battery life does seem to be better. And if anything, there's reduced lag (although I didn't really get much lag to begin with).

FYI, yes I use Advanced Task Killer as it is essential for turning of the Incredible's camera in a timely manner.
I also am quite happy having Advanced Task Manager automatically kill CityID whenever it intrudes onto my bandwidth. I find both programs to be well behaved if properly set up. And... highly recommend their use to increase daily battery life.
As the 2.2 OTA hasn't reached me yet in Venice,FL, I wouldn't guess if they will be as effective after the update as they are now.
My Incredible is as it was when first received it, good battery life, 10 times faster than my Eris.

Laaaaagggggg.

Especially when

- switch between screens
- looking at all screens (using LauncherPro)
- unlocking
- opening/switch orientation of keyboard

It's horrible. It feels like I'm trying to run Mac OSX on my old HP or something. It can't do anything visual anymore.

ALSO I'm having some serious lag issues with the screen turning on and off when I place or pick up a call. It takes a good 2-3 seconds for the screen to turn back on after answering or placing a call, or taking the phone away from my face. I did not have this problem before, at all. This is especially annoying because it's so darned easy to make accidental calls. Now I don't even know I've done it because the screen goes black immediately (as if I'm NOT going to use speakerphone anyway).

Edited to add: Switching back to Sense is making a HUGE difference, although I haven't made any calls to see if that improved. Except Sense is ugly, and it doesn't switch to landscape, etc etc. Maybe I'll use it until there's another LauncherPro update.
