Anyone else catch that bit from Swype's Cliff Kushler on CNet about needing a standardized keyboard...? CNet cut him off at that point, but this statement coupled with the statement about a time table for release on different devices, "it is up to the OEM's and carriers" makes me believe that Swype will never be released to the market.

I tried Ultra Keyboard and it was a bit laggy on my phone. Also it did not allow for much in the way of user error. I think SlideIt is probably the best of the Swype alternatives for now. I remember Shapewiter being good too, but I no longer have the APK.

Well, I don't think this counts for getting deleted as it's not a link.

I myself just got: Swype_1.61.37.8128

Works fine. Just look for it, it's easy to find. Throw it on your SDCard, install it (I use Astro myself). Then go to keyboard, check it off, and then use the tutorial. Doing that, it will ask you if you want to make it your default keyboard input.

Make sure you get the right file too. If you view it from your desktop, it should have the icon of an arrow pointing down at a horizontal bar. Oh and it was something around 15 mb (I found a lot of files in the search that were only 2 mb)

I'm guessing it will eventually expire, so in some time, those of us not in the beta will have to find the next version.

I have Swype on my Captivate and could not be happier. It's so fast, accurate and fully functional. There is so much you can do, easier and faster than with any other keyboard (I've tried nearly all of them) If you haven't, check out their web site, the tutorials are short, very useful and it gives you the tips to cut down on your learning curve.

...cheers :)

Here's the story on CNET:

This Works...Swype is back! As much as I despise Swype for making such a good product and then making it unattainable (unless you buy certain devices), after trying to use Shapewriter and Ultra keyboard then going back to Swype, I realize again how good it really is. There isn't any comparison, Swype is so much more accurate and easy to use.

Why couldn't you "keyboard in portrait"?

I feel like everyone who promotes Ultra Keyboard never says why it's any good. Thus I'm sticking with Swype.
I could never get Swype to do simple words like 'here'. 75% of the time, it would put in an incorrect word and not show 'here' on the list of possible alternatives. Maybe it's my fat fingers or something. With Ultra I don't have that problem.

Wow. I have never had a problem like that with Swype. So long as make an attempt to hit a few of the letters and put them in an order which somewhat resembles the word, I get it.
Ultra, on the other hand, cannot figure out 9 out of 10 of the words I swipe.
