2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

My exact sentiments.... When it comes, it comes - just be released working and without bugs...... :)

Really, thats your thinking? Then what if Samsung does not release it at all since everyone is so content.

Instead, Samsung should just ditch the Galaxy S, as I am thinking they will do and make everyone jump ship to the Galaxy S2 which will be their new flagship hotness in Jan 2011 with Gingerbread 3.0

Hows that for content sake?

Thats exactly what they're going to end up doing. Just like how they ditched the original Galaxy.

Galaxy S2 will be an amazing phone for damn sure. So thats gonna be the new hotness and money maker. They will end support for the Galaxy S as soon as its made official.

*3.0 Gingerbread, 8mp camera, 1080p video recording, 2ghz cpu, 1gb ram, 720p screen resolution. I mean common, they even stated how they have halted production on the Galaxy S already.

Edit: Forgot, they making the screen to a 4.3" so thats going to make the Galaxy S cry in shame and go hide in the corner to be forgotten by Samsung, quickly.

Lol, seriously. I am as sceptical of Samsung as the next guy, BUT;

If Samsung was going to ditch the Galaxy S then tell me why:

Why have they given a release date for Froyo on some European models?

Why are they saying GPS will be fixed on US SGS phones in 2.2 if it will never get 2.2?

Why the hell and I running the "leaked" version of 2.2 on my Captivate RIGHT NOW? ( GPS is working pretty good too)

And why? WHY? did you just contradict yourself?
First you posted a link on how the Canadian Captivate will get Froyo next year.
Then you say they will ditch it and never update:
"Samsung should just ditch the Galaxy S, as I am thinking they will do and make everyone jump ship to the Galaxy S2 "

Yes they are working on the next Gen of the Galaxy S right now I have read an article on it, BUT, where did you read they have stopped production on US Galaxy S phones? Do you have a link to a reliable article? They just released a few of the galaxy models a few weeks ago ffs.

Yea, I wouldn't put it past Samsung to ditch the Galaxy AFTER froyo and never upgrade it then, and move on to the next big thing, but it is rediculous to say they are ditching them NOW and will never get Froyo. Especially since in the last week they released "Updates" for all of the US galaxy S models and people are now screwing with and running "leaked" versions of froyo as we speak... Im one of them.

Google groups sync over - but selecting someone in a group gives the wrong contact
Pin and password lock added (due to Exchange) - but no way to set timeout - even if no server policy
Move mail to folders
Battery full notification in notifcation bar now
New Calendar appointments don't default to "My calendar"
Pinch zoom on homescreen to edit
SD card now mounted under /mnt instead of /
Bookmarks in Video player
Camera geolocation on if GPS on (no way to turn off except to disable GPS)

I think a lot of people are going to be dissappointed when they actually get Froyo. First off you will see how relatively easy life has been without flash. Is it a nice feature to have?, Yes, but thats it. The tethering is sweet, but once you start moving outside these extra features, you are not going to have a whole new phone. So far through testing froyo it has NOT shown anything impressive in the way of speed. A 988 quadrant score is not even as good as a stock Droid Incredible. The browser has even more lag IMO. There is no indication that this phone is using any more ram than 2.1. I am not trying to to be the bearer of bad news but for everyone thinking that Froyo is going to change the way you look at your phone, you may be severely let down. I flashed my phone back to 2.1 and ryans one click and running a 2300 quadrant. For the people that think there is no "real world" improvement I seriously beg to differ. I can definitely wait for 2.2 and possibly even the first service update afterward.

wouldnt be that off the wall, the froyo leak is very good, build quality imo, probably already in at&t's hands (so they can get rid of that ap mode :p )

not exactly all wine and roses, tho.. from captivate froyo issues over at xda:

1.Stock internet browser is very laggy, it is confirmed that there is a memory leak not related to Flash
2.GPS still sucks for some
3.Silent mode does not silent notifactions
4.Cannot download attachments in Gmail
5.Cannot delete multiple e-mails
6.Under Exchange e-mail
1.Cannot download attachments
2.Forwarding an e-mail deletes your message and only send original message
3.Cannot scroll through folders, bounces back
4.cannot forward if there is an attachment in the original e-mail
5.The good news, to fix exchange e-mail, follow this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...8&postcount=99
6.Note doing the above fix will eliminate the ability to move the e-mail from one folder to nother
7.MMS does not work, cannot receive pictures
8.If you select a contact from a group, it shows a different person, works on gmail and exchange accounts
9.Market does not show protected paid apps, however to fix market apps, follow this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=102
10.Contacts do not always import correctly (joins some and not others)
11.Cannot hear a call over the aux port, must use bluetooth or speaker
12.Force Close when changing fonts
13.3G is slower for some?

also, i thought voice dial/commands were supposed to be added in froyo?

For a leaked beta build I'd say it is very good. I think mckooter was just getting at the fact that for what it is (a leaked unfinished, unoptimized product) it is very good. It runs stable. It is faster than current stock captivate, etc. It is a good sign that the released froyo will be rockin.

@tylerdurdin - Quadrant is known to be biased towards phones running snapdragon processors. (I didn't know this til recently myself but it's been mentioned quite a bit) I have NO doubt whatsoever that the lag fix that you use had improving quadrant scores distinctly in mind when they made it. That means they did some things that didn't actually improve anything or fix any lag, but merely for a high score. Just so people would be impressed. It is ridiculous how someone can call something a benchmark when it has obvious and exaggerated biases. How much stock do you put into PC benchmarks? It's all smoke and mirrors. Benchmarks mean nothing.

Also, and most importantly, you can't judge froyo on the captivate based on a leaked beta build. The speed improvement is the main reason I am looking forward to froyo. Flash will be nice to watch hulu on too. I have little doubt the final actual official froyo 2.2 for our captivate phones will deliver. However, waiting until froyo is ACTUALLY RELEASED to judge it seems prudent. Judge the beta leak all you want tho!

quadrant scores are misleading. the file system (lag) fix disproportinately increases the scores... so a hacked 2.1 will outperform a std. 2.2 easily in quadrant scores.

quadrant is also weighted in favor of snapdragon anyway due to the fpu it uses.. which is exactly why people shouldn't rely on a bunch of meaningless benchmarks - especially when comparing across different platforms.

I'm one of the lucky ones that has a really fast Cognition Froyo, but I too have noticed that the browser can have really bad lag on some larger web sites, like huffingtonpost.com. It seems to almost act glitchy, when trying to scroll up and down the page and that is with the flash turned off in settings. With flash on, the website is almost un-scrollable. I though Froyo was specifically supposed to make web browsing faster......It seems to be with all browses, Dolphin, Skyfire, Opera, and Stock. Anyone know of a fix or work around?

I completely agree that quadrant is not the most accurate benchmark for phones, but not using it at all, is just as misleading. Use quadrant, linpack or whatever else is out there, my Captivate with 2.1 will smoke:cool: this same phone running 2.2 in EVERY aspect other than functions not available on 2.1. From settings to browser froyo falls pretty flat in the performance category. as for quadrant favoring snapdragon, maybe, but my brother in-laws incredible cannot keep up with my captivate in any manner. in fact we lauched quadrant at the same time along with my other brother in-law on his Droid X (a drag race if you will) :D I already picked up my phone to get results before their devices were done with writes. Linpack scores are equally impressive. All around i found froyo not to do what I expected most and that was to quite simply perform much better. for me I have heard over and over that rooting and lagfix have no real world effects and I can only believe that the people who say that have not rooted their device. RyanZA should be in charge of samsungs devices he is better at making them work than samsung is. In no way am I advertising or implying that anyone should root their device, as this is not for everyone. All in all I believe froyo will be great for anyone coming from a stock 2.1, for me I am just personally let down.:(

And just for the record my phone with froyo does not even compare to the X running 2.1 my brother in-laws phone beat me running 2.2 in every single thing we could compare, which is why I went back to 2.1.

Sigh...again with the judging of froyo based on a leaked beta build. No one has any idea what the actual release will be like; if I had to guess I'd say it will definitely be faster than the leak! Of course your 2.1 with hacks in place will perform better than a beta firmware! To think otherwise is absurd.

Can anyone with Froyo test out Bluetooth dialing. I will love getting Froyo for the speed, stability, and added features, but I really need the dialing for when I am in my car.

Thanks!

A quick peruse of the XDA 300+ page froyo thread reveals that bluetooth dialing is not functioning in this beta leak. Doesn't mean it won't in the actual release. Also, if I'm wrong or they've released a fix correct me! Things change by the minute over there.

Not sure about the exchange issues, voice dial (forgot to check that) or the font issue but I have absolutely none of these other problems running Cognition Froyo 2.2 beta with the OCLF lagfix. A lot of those problems are from earlier froyo leaks, the froyo for cognition version is from the sep 30th JI6 leak and issues resolved are added to the newer versions of Cognition.
Gps is almost perfect for me ( I said almost) 10sec for 8 to 10 locks and the sats stay locked, no locking then dropping over and over, the same sat stays locked whether moving or not and my tracks and Nav are withe you 95% of the time. Even when nav guesses a turn wrong it's back with you very quickly so still not 100% but night and day diff from before. GPS and auto-ratote buttons are now in the notification drawer, vibrate button is gone.
Market recognized all of my paid apps and apps were listed as me having them but not installed at that point, no probs downloading and installing them, the ones that I had restored from Titanium the market updated with froyo versions where needed.
Had one FC with contacts and all was fine after that, attachment swork in the email, gmail, yahoo, operamail, no issues. I use xScope 5.23 for a browser and it has 0 issues with froyo and loves the new flash version, very nice browser and 5.23 full is now free.
Folders scroll better than before, bounce back always happened in eclair for me when you scrolled it to the end to fast, but you can scroll in just fine froyo.
When you click on text, a cool round icon attaches to the text select cursor allowing you to put your finger on it and drag the cursor side to side, up and down and has font options, select options, etc. Bluetooth works great so far with my 3yr old samsung headphones, blue ant st3 auto handsfree and my old motorola razr hands free ear piece.
The stock browser was always laggy because the Captivate and other SGS's have a lag problem thanks to the hugely outdated file system; hence the lag fixes available for all of them. I get 1990 to 2100 in Quadrant, but so what. Quadrant was written for snapdragon processors and that's why they look so good on it. Linpack I get 14.24 Mflops now vs. 8.3 before, droid2, etc., get 60+mflops. There's the outdated files system again. How the system looks, operates and feels to you is the best benchmark ever made.

The only issues I have are with the auto screen brightness/dim control, it's either really bright or really dim, there seems to be no in between with auto mode. I've had this issue once before with a customized 2.1 rom so who knows if it's froyo or not. Froyo likes to do a lot of updating it seems and current app killers don't kill the apps on froyo, though xScope's (5.23v) browser task manager does, its just limited in options. Froyo come with a task manager but it never see any running apps while xScope's will see 10 to 20.

3 days on this now! For a beta, Cognitions froyo 2.2 beta has almost no problems for me and you can install it through clockwork rom manager.

I'd say that you can tell it's very close and that everyone always has some different issues because of different ways of installing it, not following the instructions, what other software they've installed, maybe they can't or wont read the options and instructions and on and on. Cog's version is getting good results, the ones with problems dive right in without reading the instructions or the forums on the proper way and version to install and end up having weird issues.

So yeah, you never know because when the "Official" release gets out, you will still see mixed, all over the board results for the same software.

Various quotes:

>>> Sigh...again with the judging of froyo based on a [Samsung]-leaked beta build. No one has any idea what the actual release will be like;

+1

>>> if I had to guess I'd say it will definitely be faster than the leak!

Most beta builds have debug code contained therein which tends to slow things down.

>>> I'd say that you can tell it's very close and that everyone always has some different issues because of different ways of installing it, not following the instructions, what other software they've installed, maybe they can't or wont read the options and instructions and on and on.

+1

Plus, as I've written before, some people aren't happy unless they aren't happy. Even if the phone was totally acceptable and operated as designed and promoted, someone somewhere would bitch that their morning coffee isn't as hot as it was before the update.

I am not sure if everyone else who tried the Cognition 2.2 ROM, but I can safely say that the GPS issue that is in 2.1 is not a problem in 2.2 and hardware is NOT the issue. As I was reloading my phone with apps from backup, the GPS Test app launched kind of by accident indoors. I had like 8+ satellites with a strong signal and it had a lock -- INDOORS. I was in a room with no windows!! The GPS is like instant on now. Go outside and it is instant +-5m gps accuracy less than 30 seconds. People complaining about GPS, try 2.2.

That's the good news. The bad news if you want to try the cognition ROMs, the phone is a little jerky in now. Kind of laggy. I even reapplied the OCLF. I suspect that the final one will be much better hopefully.

That happened to me as well. After I fired up Cog 2.2 the GPS was spot on and almost instantainious. Now a few days later, it's not so quick and sometimes doesnt work at all. I tried navigation yesterday and I drove all the way to my destination (45 min) without a lock after I lost the first lock when I pulled out of my driveway. I REALLY REALLY hope it is fully fixed in the official release or it's goodbye forever Samsung. They released it broken, the update didnt fix it, now they are saying froyo will fix it..

That sounds like stories we've heard before, GPS works at first then as the days go by it falls apart. I too hope that it gets fixed in Froyo, although I no longer have the phone, I'm pissed off with Samsung that I had to dump it because of their lack of resolution. It's results like this that make you wonder sometimes if there is a hardware issue instead.

Move mail to folders

That's handy. I've been using K9, not sure if that feature is implemented there either. What I'd _love_ is some Inbox rules, even as simple as move-to-folder-from-this [subject|address].

New Calendar appointments don't default to "My calendar"

Holy hell, I'm surprised there hasn't been more hootin' an' hollerin' over this!

I agree with some of what you've said here but it's important to keep in mind that this is a leaked beta. It's not the final software so it's going to be buggy. If it was working fine we would have it OTA or through Kies.
On my phone I'm not getting the general lag I did with stock 2.1. Froyo Cog 2.2 is running just as fast as 2.1 with Voodoo was for me. I'm not talking about Quadrant, which I won't get into how bad a benchmark that is, I'm talking about usage and feel of the device. It's just as fast as Cog with Voodoo was for me.
