2.2 Froyo for the Captivate Discussion

I havent read this entire thread but has anyone had problems replying to emails via an Exchange account? The message is being quoted but that's all. Anything I type in the reply is blank so the person wonders why I just hit reply and send without typing anything.

EDIT: Yep - it's a known issue and there's a fix. Just need to figure out how to root 2.2 now.

Just seems to me with a leaked version being out we are close to an ota release just wait for it and avoid these issues then root and remove bloat etc....

As we've already seen, removing stock apps can cause serious problems. Hide them with LauncherPro, freeze them with Titanium Backup if you must, but actually deleting them is not advised.

New to all this. Just did the ODIN one step process to get the froyo 2.2. Really intimidating for someone thats trying to figure this all out. Went fairly smooth with only a couple of scares. Everything seems to be working good. Jury still out on whether or not the GPS will continue to run good for more than two days. I'm guessing that I actually didn't "root" my phone by doing this? Also wandering about what to do when the OTA does come out from ATT. I Read that the version that was leaked seems to be the final version and not necessarily a beta. Of course it has the tethering and the mobile AP which some think ATT will due away with. Any opinions?

If the leaked firmware turns out to be the final version, sir, I will eat my hat.

I used Ti Back Up and unistalled the apps. Should I have just froze them instead? What problems might I expect? Can I restore them and then freeze them? Being a newbie...what is the difference between freezing them, and uninstalling them?

Would you update when OTA is available and chance loosing the tethering or would you keep this version? Just curious.

From day one I told myself I wouldn't root or do anything to my phone until 2.2 was released (I didn't and don't completely understand what rooting and flashing does, so I decided to err on the side of caution). The leak made me think again. I waited on deciding if I should or shouldn't install it until it had been out a week. Due to the bugs and other issues people have reported I opted to wait. I guarantee the official release will run a lot better than the leaked beta version. Tethering is meaningless to me BUT if I did care about it AND I had the leaked 2.2 installed I would still update to the official when it comes out. I'm sure tethering hacks embedded into ROMs based on the official release will come out rather quickly. Actually I wouldn't even bother installing the official release if I had already went down the flash/hack route due to potential complications. I would wait until said ROM above was released. I may be overly cautious but I'm not going to hack n' flash until I believe Samsung is done making significant updates for the captivate. Unfortunately, I believe froyo will be that last significant update. I hope not tho!

Titanium Backup can't back up system apps. So there's nothing to "restore". "Freezing" them just deactivates them and prevents them from running. "Uninstalling" removes them entirely from the phone.

That being said, why the choice in Titanium back up to uninstall or delete, since both choices achieve the same result?

I believe that [Delete] button, because it is in-line with the info section regarding the current backup for that file, refers to deleting the backup of that app, not deleting the app itself.

Notice the the [Restore] button next to it, the info on the backup between, and the line above separating that section from the rest.

That, good sir, is correct.

Really, thats your thinking? Then what if Samsung does not release it at all since everyone is so content.

Instead, Samsung should just ditch the Galaxy S, as I am thinking they will do and make everyone jump ship to the Galaxy S2 which will be their new flagship hotness in Jan 2011 with Gingerbread 3.0

Hows that for content sake?

Thats exactly what they're going to end up doing. Just like how they ditched the original Galaxy.

Galaxy S2 will be an amazing phone for damn sure. So thats gonna be the new hotness and money maker. They will end support for the Galaxy S as soon as its made official.

*3.0 Gingerbread, 8mp camera, 1080p video recording, 2ghz cpu, 1gb ram, 720p screen resolution. I mean common, they even stated how they have halted production on the Galaxy S already.

Edit: Forgot, they making the screen to a 4.3" so thats going to make the Galaxy S cry in shame and go hide in the corner to be forgotten by Samsung, quickly.

DAMN! what's next 4.0 cheesecake? Lol
that sounds like a great phone though. I like the features of galaxy s2

I had to go back to a Nandroid backup from last week. Once I went back to 2.1 I plugged in the phone and Kies Mini said there was an update available that was released on September 10th. I told it to update my phone - it downloaded (took forever), flashed to the phone or whatever and rebooted.

Once it rebooted I lost ALL my apps, the bloatware was back and my phone was right back to stock. It was quite frustrating - it was as though I did an Odin flash even though I didn't I just went to Cognition beta6 and moved on.
