how to make free calls from android phones

If a user has Google voice, could a call be made over the net that was free using their phone?

no. the google voice android app does not do that  (though it is handy, and i do use it for free phone to phone sms texting.)

However there are tons of voice chat apps that work if anybody u want to talk to has that app.

But, if you want to make totally free phone calls from android to a real phone number there's the skype + 1-800-FREE-411 trick...

I found it here... CONFIRMED. it works! :D

Sign up for a GV number.

Sign up for a sipgate number

Configure the sipgate number to call thru GV

Download 3CXphone app or any other VOIP app, setup profile with sipgate user name & password you receive from new number.

Download GV callback, configure your sipgate number as the number to dial.

Open 3CX phone app make sure profile is registered.

Make calls as you normally do but it will ask to make calls thru GV callback, select yes

The call will be placed thru GV and it will ring your VOIP app (3CXphone)

Answer your VOIP app and then it will ring the number you dialed

All free using 3G or wifi.

For those that have Verizon Friends and Family plan, you can make free calls by listing your Google Voice number as one of your friends and family numbers. All calls to and from those numbers do not count against your minutes.
In order to make outgoing calls through GV and have them go towards FF (Fave 5, whatever) you need the GV Callback app as well. Just using GV alone will not work. Incoming are fine as long as you have GV set to show the GV number, not the person's real number. That is a drawback, all your incoming calls show as GV, you can't use 'real' caller ID because of the way the carriers ID/bill minutes.

This is the way I have it mine set up to work on FF:
Google Voice - set to 'always use GV'
Google Voice Callback app - certain numbers are listed to use the app (non-mobile, land-lines not on FF etc.) and I have that set to auto answer so there is only a slight delay when placing a call.
Voice Choice - I bypass GV and GV Callback for my FF and mobile to mobile numbers but everything else defaults to GV. I don't need all my calls going through GV Callback but want to use my GV for a lot of situations.

All three apps work really well together and it's all automated, I just dial who I want and those apps figure out how to actually place the call for me.

I think I heard that Goog 411 is being discontinued soon...

That's the crappy part, it is. They're shutting goog 411 down on Nov 11 or 17 or something.

It never fails that whenever a software or service emerges that allows truly free or supremely discounted phone calls, it either mutates into yet another mega telcom corp (skype, vonage, etc...) or gets shut down all together.

Bell to Watson: "Mr. Watson. Come Here. I need you"... (to come pick up the World's First Phone bill for the inbound minutes I've been charging you.)
