Its October where the hell is my Froyo?!?

Well, I have some bad news for US Cellular users waiting for Froyo. I sent an e-mail to tech support at US Cellular a week ago and got a reply today. And it isn't what I was hoping to hear. Here is part of the response," US Cellular makes every effort to be viewed as a leading carier equipped with a wide-range of the latest product offerings. Unfortunately, we cannot answer with certainty when the 2.2 update will be available..." It goes on to say that it will be listed on their website when it becomes available. This indicates to me that they are not even close to a release yet. I don't think we will ever see Gingerbread released to US Cellular users. This is madness.

I don't get that at all from the response you posted. I kind of doubt that they know the exact date and if they did they are not going to use you to make the announcement. We will get it when its ready. Maybe next week, maybe next month. As far as gingerbread, your guess is as good as any. In the meantime, you have a great phone, enjoy it.

So, I have the Galaxy S Mesmerize with US Cellular. Will I get the update to 2.2, whenever it is released for my phone, automatically? Or does my phone have to be rooted?

I have the HTC Desire with USCC. There isn't a way for me to get any future updates OTA with the Desire. I'm hearing that if/when the update is ready they will post a link on their site. I'm not sure if the Mesmerize is capable of getting any updates OTA.

No the phone doesn't have to be rooted to get any future updates from the USCC. Rooting actually cuts out the middle man. There are several threads on the subject of rooting. Must reads if you are going to attempt to root.

Hope this helps.

Dell Streak is still plodding along with 1.6... can you believe it? On the plus side, it's surprisingly snappy. Silky smooth.
But 1.6????
Rumors have been trickling in over the last several weeks of the 2.2 update. Some areas overseas are updated. Just not here.
Dell is waiting on AT&T or the other way around. Newest rumor is Jan 12-18, 2011.
Nice phone, but it will get returned to BestBuy before I resort to rootin' and Rom'n once again.
:thinking::thinking::thinking:

I chatted with Samsung and ATT a week ago about Froyo release and got very little information from them. Finally, I was told that they could guarantee Froyo would be out in the 'net few days as an OTA update'. Funny it's been a week and still nothing. It's like November all over again. Seems like a typical bait and switch to me. If I was a bored attorney I'd toss together a class action suit.

Well,

US Cellular must be about to release Froyo. I just visited the US Cellular website and under the related links section of Smartphones/ Android is now a heading called Software Updates. Clicking on that reveals a list of improvements and at the bottom it says Click here for approved updates coming soon. I noted that it talks about wi-fi hotspot in the update description and it says in bold Must have a US Cellular tethering plan. To those who already have Froyo, wasn't this a free service of the update? Looks like this might be one of the watering down aspects of the approved update.
