Modifying Application

I'm wanting just to modify a few images in an application and then instal the modified files. I know this can be done as I've seen it been done, however, I do not know how to do this.

I have the .apk on my computer and I have changed it to a .zip and I've changed all the images I wanted to. Now my question is, how do I get it to where I can install it to my phone?

I've never done this, but I suppose that you should preserve the names and dimensions of the images, and then change .zip back to .apk, save it to the microSD, and then start it from your phone from file manager, like all the others?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that that's what I've tried to do. When I do that however, it gives me an error saying it couldn't parse the package.
