I have confirmed this in the return policy on verizonwireless

Return Policy & Termination Fee | Verizon Wireless
obviously the important part being...
You will remain responsible for your Activation Fee unless you terminate service within three days of activation. You will also be responsible for all applicable usage fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges or other charges that accrued to your account through the termination date.
I am personally planning to see if Best Buy will waive the activation if I sign up for the 5GB plan, which I'll need the first month. At least that way, I won't have to pay the activation fee again, whenever I start data up after the initial month.

Android does not have to take any of the current iPad users. Their current 95% share represents less than 10% of the potential tab market. It's getting the other +90% that's the key. Unlike the iPad there will be plenty of product at varying prices to grab market share for Android. Much like what happened with the cell market.

So 95% definitive represents 10% possible?
You're also assuming then that Ipad sales stop as soon as new Android sales start. Yes Android tabs very much have to beat the Ipad.

Well you are 100% wrong. Android has already beat Apple in the cell phone arena at the same or higher prices and is about to do the same in the tablet arena.

This is about the best "Android Tablet" not tablet in general. As we did in the cell phone arena Android will dominate and Moto will offer the best Android Tablet currently on the market.

Victory will be ours!

Because Iphone has been limited to 1 carrier. Ipad doesn't have that restriction.

I spend 3 -4 hours a days reading news, email, web etc. $800 for a device with specs that won't be exceeded for a year is a deal!

800 / (4 x 365) = 54 cents and hour. Can't do much for that! ;)

Not to mention I could sell it for $400 at the end of the year.

"Won't be exceeded in a year", huh? Dude the Kal-El (soon to be Tegra 3)chips will be in tablets in half a year. Tablets with those chips will make the Xoom like like a Model T next to a porsche 911.
So enjoy paying that $800 so you can browse the web on a tab that will be obsolete in about half a year. What a deal :).
Also its not 800, you're forgetting tax and activation.

Wow! The "obsolete" card is already in play? geez. I didn't think it would be pulled out until at least page 6 of the thread. :p

What's funny is...we're all probably going to have the same discussion about pricing when the T3 tablets come out. Let's just let the people buy their BMWs/mercedes and we can go buy our Toyota's/Honda's but let's all just drive on the same road. :)

Yes this tablet isn't looking like a good buy with this information NVIDIA: Quad Core Tablets In August, Phones At Christmas | Android Phone Fans . I Know we always say buy what makes you happy, but damn this tablet wont be more than 6 months old before it's obsolete. Most times devices at least carry 1 year before they get this tag (minus the samsung galaxy tab). Why get Tegra 2 tablet when in half year quads will be in these things. At least by that point nvidia said they won't be coming out with the next chip for a year.

Let's just let the people buy their BMWs/mercedes and we can go buy our Toyota's/Honda's but let's all just drive on the same road. :)

This made me laugh out loud! So true after debating this tablet for so long, and this whole beat Apple stuff. It really doesn't matter at all if they do or don't. I will still enjoy my android tablet even if it doesn't stomp out an iPad. Point is I love the android platform, and I'm going buy what I like, and if someone thinks its crazy this scenaro wouldn't be first time. Android is here to stay for a long while, I don't see Apple putting them to the street curb just because they dominate the tablet market.

Because when I crash my non GTR Nissan into their BMW it doesn't cost as much :).

I have gotten stuck on the "wait for the next great thing" track before. And all it really ends up doing is preventing you from ever buying because there will always be the rumor of the next great thing just when you are about to buy the last great thing you waited so long for.

Its called "analysis paralysis"

At some point - we need to be able to call "good enough" and buy while understanding there will be something cooler shortly. I will pull the trigger on mine no later than June. I just want to get a sense of the current crop of devices. Xoom is currently leading the way.

You've had a lot to say about what people should be getting. Obviously you've made it clear that the Xoom is not worth the price tag (that by the way still isn't offical). Your alternatives have been telling people to buy nooks, and adams. I'd be willing to bet most people on these forums know about those two tablets. I'd also be willing to bet that they don't want an e-reader they need to hack to become a tablet. The adam has a lot bad press why would anyone want invest one penny into that mess? Along with the 3G version being $549.

Lets not forget that nook isn't 10 inch. That's a deal breaker for a lot people who are looking for that 10 inch display. You've talked a lot about Honeycomb, and how every tablet will be running it sooner or later. Your right they will be, but you also said who buys an android tablet for the OS!? So then hardware is what people buy into. Your preaching to people that I think know what they want, and are informed on there choices. I can respect your opinion about why you don't like the Xoom price, but for some people here what the Xoom offers is exactly what they want, so why should they settle for anything less if they have the money?

EDIT: Holy cow, and people were bitching about the Xoom http://phandroid.com/2011/02/16/htc-flyer-price-is-670-euros-says-amazon-germany/ . How can they expect to sell this @ $900 when it's got a smaller screen, and internals are all lower spec than almost every other tablet due out in Q1 and Q2. I guess putting a stylus makes your tablet the bomb diggity...

I don't think you're going to have the choice not to activate it. Activation/activating wifi is going to cost you $55. $35 activation fee, $20 for the lowest 1 month pan Verizon will have for it (which is required for wifi activation, so says Best Buy). In my area that makes the Xoom come out to over $900 ($913, 7.5% sales tax) with taxes and activation.

It still shocks me that apparently no one has bothered to read the Verizon activation/cancellation policy, which clearly states you will be responsible for your $35 activation fee, UNLESS "you terminate service within three days of activation." Furthermore, you will only be responsible for any data that is actually used (i.e., prorated), not the entire $20, or whatever rate you chose at sign up.

So no, you won't have to dish out $900 plus dollars (or in my case, its just the $799, with no tax since there's no sales tax in my neighboring state where I'll be making my purchase ;)). Just buy the Xoom, then go home and immediately call to cancel the monthly data plan service, and the activation will be waived, and you'll only be charged for any data you used on a prorated bases. In my case, its just the $799, with no tax since there's no sales tax in my neighboring state where I'll be making my purchase ;)

I am thinking the Wifi is the European version, at least at first? I'd rather not buy a 3G/4G, hopefully it is avail in US.

Wouldn't they talk in euros then? He's quoted in dollars, and the Euro 3G isn't going be out in europe until Q2 I think. Also the wifi & 3G in europe is going be alot more than our $600 dollar/ euro conversion.
