Are you using the Velocity scripts or SetCPU to overclock?

If you're using the scripts are you typing "su" to gain superuser rights before typing "velocity"?

If you forget the "su" you will not overclock.

Its the velocity script in terminal, and I have it set to su automatically every time terminal loads. I was able to score in the 1300's one time after a fresh velocity install, and have never been able to repeat it... its always in the 500's now regardless of clock speed/governor.

All excessive software is gone, most apps are installed to SD, I'm at 787 w/ smartass, and I habitually use task killers. I don't understand, the phone is still fast but I feel like its being held back. (if everyone else seems to effortlessly score in the 1300's) Any help would be appreciated.

Task killers are no good. I used to use them but after reading about them i stopped and have less memory (not by a whole lot) but everything is much smoother. I oc at 806 and get about 1100. Plenty fast phone never lags or anything. And my hpone has all sorts of apps and widgets and things runnings in the background. Set cpu wasnt working as well for me on velocity 1 always had to go in a reset it even with profiles enabled so i used the velocity script. Do you have it set to run at boot?

I notice a drastic increase in free memory when I use battery doctor pro's killer_widget... far more than ATK pro or any of those other ones, it goes from 39MB free to 80+ in one click. Anyhow yes I do have it set to run at boot. I noticed that I also had to constantly reload SetCPU on velocity even with profiles enabled... can't explain that one so I just started using the built in script.

side note: When running quadrant side by side with my friends Droid X (OC'd on liberty), I noticed our phones are much smoother at rendering the orbiting moon... but the DX excels in the 3D room/stair test. Any thoughts?

Free memory isnt all you think it is. My phone usually has about 30mb of free memory and will get a quadrant of 1000-1200. Task killers are no good. in short you use more resources reopening everything over and over vs just leaving it idle in the background

Wow, thanks for the info King, that was a very interesting read... I also bought into the whole more memory is better thing, which I guess is true but given the explanation why these tasks run it is better to just let them do their thing. I uninstalled ATK and removed Battery doctors killer widget, I want to see if those things are really just placebo.

Just ran another quadrant... 577 :( It needs to be DOUBLE!

I was there too one day not so long ago. Takes a little getting used to but you'll see. I really would like to know what's messing with those numbers. Maybe try wiping and reflashing

Same thing as always. I was getting 1350's with a fresh install + scripts. None of my settings changed it, I installed BW and Extended controls then noticed it dropped back to 550.

Uninstalled BW and Extended controls, did a couple resets and still 550. It is still a fresh install with only quadrant advanced at 806mhz smartass and its lucky to pull 600. This is the same thing I ran into last time... its fine and then all it takes is one reset and it all goes to hell. I can't figure out what's responsible for this.

BW = Beautiful Widgets

It doesn't make sense that one app, or even 10 being installed would hinder the performance of the CPU that drastically... It must be some setting. On fresh install when I do the full benchmark it marches through the CPU tests without hesitation (even faster than my friends DX), now since magic happened it lags during the whole CPU benchmark.

Before - Through all 12 tests in less than one second - Quad score - 1339 (best)
Now - Holds up on checksum, compiling and video decoding. Takes about 10 seconds to get through. Quad score - 550 average

Very very odd. How does your phone feel with everything on it?? Is it super laggy or does it still run ok

The phone feels/operates better than it ever did (compared to stock 2.1/2.2), but I think it could be better, for example: Intermittent lag when: returning to home screen, switching screens, and the touch doesn't seem to respond as fast as it could. Given these problems do occur randomly and disappear quickly, however I can't shake the feeling that something is holding it back from its full potential.

I'm going to fiddle around with it for the next couple of days and see if I can't pinpoint what is causing this. Thanks for your input btw, feel free to throw out any more ideas you might have... nothing sounds too crazy at this point.

I get around 850 with velocity 1.0 and my phone OC'd to 750. Before I rooted and installed velocity I was using ADW launcher and it seemed to scroll way better than the standard homes but there was a ton of lag loading icons. With velocity there is almost no lag and I love it! Angry Birds also plays extremely smooth even without the background graphics disabled in the new version. With stock Froyo it ran very slow but was playable. Barely.

Go to the Market and pick Up SetCpu for $1.99 It seems to work better than using the script in Velocity for Over Clocking.

At least that has been my experience.

No need to waste any money when you already have the needed tools in the Velocity script that work even better than SetCPU. SetCPU requires you to go in and manually set the CPU frequency at every boot. With the Velocity script, you just set it and forget it. It sets properly on boot each and every time.

I have figured out what was killing my quad scores:

STAGEFRIGHT

Enabled - High quad score / has video complications

Disabled - Low quad score / no video complications

I rarely record video anyway so most of the time stagefright is enabled. Finally I figured it out.

Finally jumped from 450 back up to 1900 thanks so much.
Does this mean the speed will be better overall

I am unsure exactly what stagefright does so it's hard to say with any kind of authority that it will be faster... it makes your quad score better and when it is running the benchmarks (particularly the CPU benchmark) you will notice a DRASTIC increase in speed with stagefright enabled. So in theory; faster benchmarking means a faster phone.

I like to think it makes things faster/smoother, but it could all be placebo. And plus you get the mental satisfaction of having a quad score in the 1000's.

What does stagefright do and how do i enable it?

If you are running Velocity 1.0 stagefright will be enabled by default. To change this go into the terminal, type "su" (w/o quotes), once you get the # for root go to option 3, then to option 6 to toggle stagefright.

No idea what it does, methinks it has something to do with video and some other stuff. You know what, i'm gonna find out right now.
