Faster processor, expanded capability = what kind of battery:(?

I love the evo, but wouldn't upgrade to a more powerful phone that may have an even worse battery problem. I didn't wait for the original evo hit the wild, but i will for this one,

Consider that the processor is actually more efficient as well. I don't see battery being any more (or less) and issue than the OG EVO.

I thought I would also pose the question: What were you all honestly expecting? People are saying they expected more. What more did you honestly expect? Pretty much EVERYTHING was a huge upgrade on this phone. I think it was a bigger jump than any other phone upgrade thus far. Just curious, for those that are thinking of keeping the EVO, what it would have taken to get you to make the leap.

1080p video capture +
Higher pixel density +
1.2 Dual Ghz Processor ++
Stock with gingerbread/new sense + (Evo 4G will catch up)
3D IMO - ..it probably dosent look like true 3D and even if it does that would give me a headache, plus too gimmicky. just straight up dont like the idea of it
No kickstand -
5mgp Dual back facing cameras - another negative imo . although it takes 3D pictures that dosent really appeal to me, I would much rather have seen them bump the camera to 10 or 12 mgp (like the nokia n8)
Physical appearance and form factor - I think the Evo 4G looks much more appealing

The positives definitely outweigh the negatives, but are they enough to ditch my current evo.. i doubt it, but we'll see when there is more in depth looks at this thing

Maybe it's not the new Sense, but it is different than what is on my Evo. The home screen rotates into landscape. I like that.

Is there a way to check what version of Sense is running on it?

it rotates in land scape because of the keyboard.. it wouldn't make sense to be holding the phone physically in landscape mode (with the keyboard out) and still have the screen in portrait mode, but i get what you mean it would be nice to have that option even with phones that dont have a keyboard .. I actually wasn't expecting much more (except for increased internal storage without having to root, taking into consideration all the bloatware Sprint will put on the phone), but I wasn't expecting changes from the current EVO that I actually like and felt were very convenient.

These are the things that would've convinced me 100% to upgrade:
1) Still have a kickstand or improved kickstand (more seamless) w/o needing a case
2) Still be the same dimensions w/ same ports (so that current HTC docks that I own could be used for the new EVO, which is part of what made the iPhone so successful, even though I would never buy one)
3) More internal storage w/o having to root. Regardless of being able to move apps to SD, there are still apps that can't be moved and I've gotten the "out of memory" error message a few times that I had to delete apps that I wanted, even though I used them sparingly.

These things may seem so minute, but they're important enough for me that I'm happy to stick with my current EVO for another year.

I voted no,

Eventually, I say even before the EVO 3G is sold in stores, it will be rooted and the new Sense extracted from it. I will then apply it to the current EVO and have my landscaped Sense with a kickstand. Since I have the phone plugged in most of the time anyway the extra battery won't matter to me. True its a better looking screen, but I can live with that.

I still have another year on contract with the current EVo and by the time I am out of contract, EVO part 3 will be announced and coming to market.

TS out

There's a 3D TV (must be demo) in the Johnny Rockets by my work. If the 3D images on the EVO 3D are anything like that, then I'd definitely say it's not "gimmicky."

That said, I'm not really a huge fan of the whole 3D movement (I'm one of those people that gets nauseous playing 1st person shooter games), but it's the path of tech nowadays, so when they've got it to the point that we don't need glasses, that's a great thing.

though this phone looks crazy, i might do the "wait and see" approach. if it was anything like the original evo release with all those manufaturing issues. plus twospirits makes a great point. the devs over at xda will have a field day porting some awesome roms that will have gingerbread and sense 2.0 to my current evo. i will definitely look forward to playing with them. it will probably tie me over until i can upgrade. especially now that sprint took away my yearly upgrade eligibility, i will wait. there is no way i will pay full price for a phone. i'm going to take a guess at the price at being something around what the htc thunderbolt is going for, $599.

however, i really do want this phone!

The 3D doesn't do anything for me. I'm happy with the EVO 4G right now, even though I can upgrade in June. I'll take a wait and see...if this thing is really a big upgrade over the 4G, I'll reconsider. Right now, just not enough to get me so excited that I'll part with my beloved EVO.

Oh, and it does look like Gingerbread and the new Sense are coming to the 4G sometime after the EVO 3D lauches...so even less reason to upgrade. When I do upgrade though, it will be to another HTC for sure.

your missing the message.. whether the 3D looks amazing or horrible, its still gimmicky. the whole notion of 3D is a gimmick. gimmick for movies, gimmick for tvs, gimmick for gaming consoles, and now a gimmick for cell phones.. its like going to see a 3D movie, the first times its cool and exciting and after that its just annoying and for lack of a better word "gimmicky" , after using the phone for a day im sure youll turn the 3D off.. that being said its still a great phone with some significant improvements. the only phone on the market that can compare in terms of specs is the motorola atrix, however im sure by summer there will be plenty of phones just as good and some that are better

I would probably upgrade if Sprint had not of taken away my ability to do so without paying up the wazoo. I mean, I am a new Sprint customer switched from ATT, and the yearly upgrade was one of the deciding factors (besides the awesome EVO phone). Now they have taken that away. Sure I still have the awesome EVO phone, but still stuck with the same phone for two years...

agreed and i think that sprint and htc are just getting their feet with the Evo line.. I think we can expect many relatives of the evo in the future, far more superior than the 3D

I would jump on this in a second. I love my EVO, but I am an Android tech nerd and want the newest thing. The only thing that is holding me back with the EVO 3D is Sprints new, stupid policy of dropping a good majority of us paying several hundred dollars a month to the Bronze "Titty-Kaka" level of "Premiere" so we can't get the yearly upgrade.

Oh I think I'll find a way by using my wifes upgrade, but I mean damn. If I am able to do this I'll donate my EVO to my wife so she can move up from my old Hero.

I don't think 3D is a fad. It is a natural progression of technology where we're getting closer and closer to simulating reality. When I was playing Zelda on my 8-bit NES, my parents made the comment that it was so complicated. They were thinking video games would always be simple like pac man or asteroids. I wonder what they would say to something like Starcraft 2.

Movies. Was the addition of sound to a movie a gimmick? Color? Surround sound? It's hard to say yes looking back in hindsight, but they had their awkward moments.

Phones. Some would argue that the touchscreen was gimmicky.

That said, when a new technology first blossoms, it's often abused. When "stereo" music was all the rage, they put instruments solely on left and right channels (think drums on left, vocals on right) which gave a very imbalanced feel. These days, you don't notice the stereo. It now enhances the experience without hogging the spotlight. No one needs to market a song as "In Stereo" anymore. 3D will get there. It's just in that awkward phase where we don't know how to make best use of it. But devices like the Evo 3D are a necessary stepping stone.

Personally, I don't find 3D to be essential in my smartphone, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

good points and observations.. but its not really new technology, i dont know exactly when i saw my first 3D movie, but i know it was at least a good ten years ago or so, that being said it isnt really new technology, its just old technology being introduced to new platforms.. such as tvs, cell phones, etc.. i just think that the whole 3D thing is truly a gimmick, at least for right now.. kind of like the wii, cool idea on paper but wait in line for hours to buy one, come home play it once and let it block the dust from my xbox 360 for the next four years.. all this being said im very aware that the 3D in the movies that I saw ten years ago is not the same 3D you see now, in regards to clarity and such, but still nothing groundbreaking to me, plus it gives me a headache and is much too busy on a screen

My Evo is only 3 months old, so I'll be likely sticking with it for another 1.75 years. Even so, I don't really see any compelling reasons to upgrade. As you can see, I'm more than willing to let other people be the Evo 3D guinea pigs, get all the quirks out of it, and then pick it up myself a year later. Thanks, guinea pigs! ;)
