Returned Atrix after three wks and got Thunderbolt

HECK YEAH!

Apparantly Verizon has been holding out on it the whole time. BASTARDS!!!!
I'm wondering if they did something to their radio to allow this and the TB is the first phone to have this ability. Cause I'm not sure why they aren't flaunting this feature (at AT&T, lol) When I was talking to some of the Verizon members here, they said they can't do that on their (older) Android models.

BTW, I now have 24 hours on my TB and at 25% battery. No 4G here.
That's nice :) Good hearing that you're enjoying the TB and your Android experience has improved. I have read complaints on the TB's battery...but from what I've seen, battery life issue has been a constant issue with all Android phones.

SOmething to do with chipset, from what I read.

And also, this is the first gen dual phone, so I guess there are some bugs that may still need to be worked out which is why they are not advertising. Don't want to give it a bad image if there are problems I guess. From what I have noticed with Verizon, switching from wifi-3g-cdma, it isn't as smooth process and I get data timeouts. Never had this issue with ATT Iphone.

Your TB must be special like your Iphone 4 battery, my bro just picked up the TB yesterday and no where near your battery life. He's fine with it though he normally charges it a few times a day anyway.

My second day of having this phone and an overnight charge, I got 8 hours and it was dead, from a full charge. Lets just say, I was rather dissapointed.

Two days later.....

I should have taken a picture of my phone this morning, but I plugged it in about an hour ago so the "since plugged in" was reset.

Stats said 1 day 4 hours, 37%(app said 37%, but I just guess on the indicator bars at 25%)

I also turned off LTE early this morning around 1:00am since I am not in a 4G area yet.

Also, this is not my primary phone yet, so this is very minimal use. I will probably port my number over from ATT later today or tomorrow morning. Need to figure out what to with my wifes phone. 3 little kids under 6, so the Iphone is a MUST HAVE!!!

I just got back from checking out the thunderbolt at the verizon store. I had to see what the big deal was... So I ran the speed test app on both my atrix and the thunderbolt, the thunderbolt killed it on the speed test app, but then I went and did a drag race with the stock browsers. sorry to say but at least here in center city philadelphia the atrix still wins, regardless of what that speed test app says. I'll go do it again and post a vid at a later date if needed. Anyone else done the comparison?

I stopped worrying about the Speed Test app as well since every page I touch loads fast anyway. I was in the innermost office on the 6th floor of my building (11 floors) today and people wanted to see a video. They swore I wouldn't even have a signal but I was able to load an HQ youtube video with no problems.

Yeah I work on the 35th floor of my building in cc and have had much better signal than I did with my old htc fuze as well.

I think a video comparison would be lovely!

I feel compelled to chime in! Sorry to say I returned my Atrix yesterday, and yes I did get the Thunderbolt on Launch day last Thursday. I have a business at&t line and a personal line on VZW, so this allowed me to pretty much use both hand in hand for a few days. I will be the First one to admit...I really really like the Atrix! The phone is straight out bananas, I love everything about it. The size, the screen, the processor, battery life, everything! It's an amazing device. However at&t absolutely suxx, they are terrible! How are u going to release a 4G phone, when you dont even have 4G? Seriously now, are they kidding me. The thing is a snail running on they're network, not to mention I was constantly loosing my connection to the network, no matter where I was. So it just had to go back! However when u compare it against the Thunderbolt, it all comes down to network....the TB is an animal! I don't care what anyone says, the TB is insanely crazy fast on VZW's real 4G network...there is no comparing them as far as the networks go. As phones, there is, and I give my nod to the Atrix! I will be grabbing the Bionic as soon as it hits VZW, and if battery life is anything like the Atrix, I will be extremely happy. I was getting about 15 or so hours on very heavy usage with the Atrix, I get nowhere near that with the TB...battery life is terrible...oh well, the price you pay to have the fastest phone on earth right now...Yes people, its that fast!

Yes the Thunderbolt is the first Verizon device to feature voice+data at the same time via 3G or 4G LTE. One of the reasons I went ahead and left AT&T for Verizon and the TB.

I'm thinking it has to do with the LTE network. Since it was the 3G that Verizon had a disconnect on their phone with 2G. Also makes sense that LTE is allowing them this capability since the TB is the first LTE phone.

One of the questions when the Iphone came to verzion was if it could do talk/data at the same time. Answer, NO!! It has become somewhat of an embarrassment to Verizon. ATT can do it, T-mobile can do it, and even Sprint can do it(4G anyway). Verizon is the last to come to the table. Why did it take them so long, they could have done it years ago.

I don't understand how those carriers get away with that. Up here north of the border all of our biggest carriers are constantly matching each other to compete for clients. Our two main carriers ar Bell and Rogers and are pretty much identical in network performance (my opinion, others may vary), with the only real differences being pricing packages.

What do you mean by this? The US Carriers also compete with one another for each other's clients.

Actually it's Bell and Telus that are identical :) They both share the same infrastructure. Both are CDMA carriers and partnered up to build their own HSPA network (3G+ aka '4G'). Telus built the HSPA network for west Canada (praries+BC) and Bell built the network for east of Canada. They will remain CDMA on 2G part, but they'll use AWS for both UMTS and LTE.

Sorry, I meant in terms of network performance, not infrastructures. I've read a lot of you folks down south have dislikes with ATT network performance, as opposed to other carriers. Here it's mainly Rogers or Bell as the big 2, with Telus, Virgin, Fido, Koodo, etc etc etc as other carriers. But AFAIK both rogers and bell are pretty much even here as far as how fast and reliable their service is, at least in Ontario. ( I think Rogers owns ATT or visa versa, can't remember)

Because it wasn't possible on a CDMA network. Sprint COULD NOT do it until they released WiMax. ATT and T-Mobile were able to because they are GSM networks. Now that Verizon has released their LTE (and because the TB's chipset supports SVDO 3G) they can do it.

no they don't, I think you still misunderstood my post. It's about the comparison between two entirely different carriers - Rogers and Bell. Like I said in my last post, rogers and bell do not share the same infrastructures, and they are directly in competition to each other. They do not use the same network infrastructures. Their subsidiaries use theirs (ie. Virgin Mobile uses the Bell network here). But their network performance levels, meaning upload/download speeds, nationwide coverage etc here is pretty much the same whether you choose Rogers Telecom or Bell. The only way they differ is in the way they offer their plan pricing.

Does that clear it up? I'm not comparing carriers that are partners, I'm talking about two entirely different carriers, two entirely independent unrelated companies. My point being that there have been several posts complaining about ATT service whereas a large carrier here doesn't have the luxury of offering shittier service than the others or no-one will sign with them, exclusive phone or not.

This is why I love these forums. Thank you for the information. I have been agonizing about returning my Thunderbolt with the hope that Bionic would have better battery life. TB is my first smart phone so I don't know if I have even developed a Sense vs. Blur prejudice yet. I love the Thunderbolt, it really is a sweet device. I just can't stand dealing with the battery issue and constant worry that the battery will die and now I don't have a usable phone.

I'm sure Atrix and Bionic will be somewhat different on battery life, but from what I've learned on these boards...Moto's reputation vs. HTC's as regards battery life has to be an indicator of improvement, right?

I got over 5 hrs 30 mins of display time yesterday with an 85% charge so if the Bionic is anything close to the Atrix's battery life, it'll be a great. I never cared about all that bootloader stuff because I'm probably going to get another phone before I feel my phone is underpowered by way of software. Being a dual core alone gives it the ability to improve over time. Whether there is a development community for it or not, the apps will be designed to run better with a dual-core in the future. I did the same thing buying a quad-core in 2008. It has only gotten faster as programs became multi-threaded.

Motorola kills HTC in terms of battery life. The Droid X had great battery life, I never had to worry like I did with my incredible or EVO. Honestly I can't understand why HTC continues to ship these small batteries with these extremely powerful phones? But that's a question for a different day. Anyway, I really like sense and I really like the look of HTC devices. However, at the end of the day Motorola puts out a really good product. Blur to me was a non event on the Atrix, was pretty mild, didn't really bother me at all. But I went with Launcher Pro just cause I like the ability to change up a lot of things. Plus Motorola is pretty good on the build quality end of things, and they're phones offer superb call quality. So, Either way I'm amped up for the Bionic.
