Root Problems with Rooting/flashing ROMs

So yesterday I finally formatted my phone to get rid of the file transfer problem.
I'm running stock 2.2, so it wouldn't verify the .zip update. had to do one of the 'One-Click-Roots'
Root worked, installed superuser.
Ended up skipping the 'restore to stock firmware' because I couldn't get it to work.
Then afterwards I tried to install the clockworks program then launch serendipity. but of course it told me the signature failed.
So I look into the firmware restorer. The file I downloaded was extremely small and I assumed I had to DL the FW seperately, couldn't find it. Downloaded a packaged one, and it didn\t work. the process just failed once my phone was in DL mode. So what am I doing wrong?

When you download the zip file, what program are you using to open it? Basically, run me through how you're transferring the downloaded file to your SD card.

I'm having a bit of a problem. I flashed to Cognition 4.3 last night. When I went to restore in Titanium Backup, I accidentally hit restore missing apps and ALL system data. Now, I'm having issues with force closes on a lot of applications (texting, Android system when trying to assign custom ringtones, etc). Is there any way to remedy this without a master clear and new flash?

Odin, Master Clear, and start over is the only way, but WELL worth it!

Well I never opened the ZIP file myself, my phone did I did have to change every zip file to 'update.zip' except for serendipity.
Since I have 2.2 was it okay to skip the downgrade? if not how do i do it

I thought so. I won't need to flash stock ROM and then reflash Cog 4.3 though since I'm sticking with the Cog 4.3 right? Just need to master clear and restore missing apps and data?

Personally I would go back to stock via Odin then master clear. This way you know for a fact that everything is running the way it should. Also, if you develop problems with the new flashed ROM, then you will know that it is not a leftover problem from the previous ROMs. This will help the devs to help you solve your issues a lot easier!
