Root First time rooter with probs

After months of deliberation I finally decided to root my desire last night. I used the unrevoked windows program to root the phone and made a backup of my current installation of HTC Android and I've installed an app called root check and it tells me that my phone is rooted. At this point it was getting late so i called it a night and went to bed planning to flash a ROM today.

[ROM][Ginger Sense][04May]RCMix S v1.1 Evolutionary Sense, Lightning quick! - xda-developers

A friend of mine recommended this ROM and I have had a go at flashing it today.
Unfortunately I do not seem to be able to get it working. When I flash the zip file it runs through the installation and says it has been successful and to enjoy. But when I reboot it hangs in the HTC splash screen it did say that it would take a while but I've left it for about 20 mins and I've tried reflashing it 3 times and the same thing happens.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Please don't be be afraid to point out the obvious as I am a complete newbie to this.
Thanks in advance :)

Firstly, read the rooting FAQ, linked from the sticky post or SUroot's sig (just find one of his posts - you won't have to look far ;)).

As for your problem, did you wipe the phone (factory reset) first? If not that's probably the cause - settings from the stock ROM not being compatible with the one you just flashed.

Now you can do the wipe from recovery, but it will wipe all of your apps and data. So before you do that, what backup(s) did you make? Was it a backup from recovery (aka nandroid), or a Titanium Backup, or both? The first allows you to return to the original ROM, but the second is needed to transfer your apps over to the new ROM after a wipe. If you only did a nandroid, and would like to carry apps etc over, then restore to your original ROM, install and use Titanium (I also use MyBackup for SMS and call logs, as I find that easier), and then try again.

Sorry, that's probably a bit condensed! Summary - I'm guessing you need to wipe before flashing, but make sure you are happy you have everything you want backed up before doing it.

If you didn't do a nandroid backup then let us know, and we'll discuss options from there.
