***Official OTA First Impressions Thread (non-rooted stock)***

Major negatives of the stock GB update:

-Battery life seems quite a bit worse, even with me having done all of the usual battery-saving techniques in stock, unrooted Android (no active widgets, Battery Saver profile, screen on auto-brightness, no BT, GPS or Wi-Fi etc).
-When in contacts I go to enter a new contact and I am prompted with "Choose an account to store new contacts" and I have Googler or BackUp Assistant (which I refuse to use and skipped the initial setup). Even if I choose Google and tick "Remember this choice" it still prompts me with this screen EVERY time I go to enter a new contact. This is VERY annoying since I do the majority of my PIM and contact data input on my handset and not via PC browser.
-Keyboard still lags horribly
-Hard button illumination frequently does not come on, even in a pitch-black environment
-Video recording seems wacky. It stutters and locks up when initiating recording. I lost two "memorable moments" this week when it appeared to be recording but nothing was written to the card. This has never happened before with my DX or that same Sandisk memory card.

Minor but still annoying GB issues:
-New Gmail messages occasionally do not show up until I hit "refresh" even with auto-sync is enabled.
-Inexplicable signal loss when sending multiple text messages in a row. I have gotten a BUNCH of "message not sent" notifications this week!
-When I hit "Settings, Applications, Manage Applications", the graph at the bottom of the screen is frequently corrupted. Same thing happens with the "Battery use" graphic as well as the "Applications", "Running services" graph for RAM usage.
-Camera always defaults to widescreen mode after a reboot, as has been widely reported

The Pros:
-MUCH better, smoother peformance (obviously) and usability (especially the ability to clear individual notifications)
-The new "GingerBlur" UI is far from perfect but a huge improvement over the Froyo Blur.
-Gallery seems MUCH faster now
-No more unlock screen lag
-The new baseband seems to have helped reception slightly in fringe areas (but the DX is still inferior to my OG Droid or especially older Moto CDMA phones like the RAZR2 V9m).
-The home button clock to view the 7 panel overview is a nice touch too.

Overall, I'd love to see one final Droid X update that would bump it up to Android 2.3.4 and resolve all of the little lingering bugs but I am afraid this is the end of the road for official DX updates from Moto.

I'm having all of the same issues. I can't get a single music app to work including stock. Now I am unable to download any apps from the market. Battery is draining rapidly without much use, and i've probably had to do >15 battery pulls. This update has rendered my phone useless.
I ended up calling support and they had me do a hard reset, now all is well. Run's as expected, pretty much every issue I mentioned is fixed. Just remember to backup all your info to the SD that you want to keep, 'cuz everything is erased on the phone, with the hard reset.

Got my OTA GB update this weekend and so far pretty happy with it although today is the first day at work with it and that will be a much better test than my light weekend usage. Got a scare on first installation when after rebooting the first time got notified that Mobile Defense was crashing and everything froze up - no keys worked and background was just black. Let it ride for a good ten minutes and then finally pulled that battery out and the after that everything seems to be fine.
Have noticed the "blue spongey" thing when you scroll the end of a list and after reading for a week how irritated people were by it I can honestly say I don't understand what some of you are mad about. It has virtually no impact on me and seems like such a minuscule little thing I can;t believe someone hated it enough to actually complain about it.
Same with the brighter hard key LEDs - doesn't bother me although if I find they kill my battery I might amend that opinion..lol
I FEEL like the phone moves around more snappily.
I Like the new colors and I think the redesigned icons and buttons are nicer looking.
Where's my history at? I had a complaint with Froyo regarding the history tab of the contacts app (wherein anyone could see all my previous emails and texts if they just looked at that tab even though I had deleted them out of the originating applications - my compliant was that I work in IT for a non-profit healthcare related company and am privy to confidential medical information in my corporate email that I wouldn't want leaked if someone got hold of my phone. I only just recently found out about that contacts tab and looked and sure enough there was a year of confidential donor information just waiting to be plucked if I got jacked.) So, I looked at that contacts app now and there is no longer a history tab. I am fine with that but I just need to know if it was done away with or if it was moved and now I need to hunt it down again.

SO anyway, pending battery life tests at work today, I'm digging Gingerbread.

I've definitely got better battery life span, by about 40-50% more. I can actually cut and paste (I hadn't rooted just yet). I'd lived and died with cut and paste for years with Palm, and for a year with a WM Imagio. GB is better for me than Froyo with the phone being a touch faster particularly when accessing my contacts.

How do you customize the tray icons?

Dunno if you got an answer yet, but if you did not, it's like customizing anything else: long press will give you a list. Select what you choose.

My very favoritest thing is that I can put my brightness control app there. For me there's no in between for brightness: I either want it was 100% (outside in the sun) or at 0% for the rest of the time. The app I have lets me do it in two touches. Yay.

+1 bottom buttons too bright! - wish they were adjustable - someone got an app???

AdjBrightness can be used to keep the lights off at all times. In the options, just check "Lock off button light", presto, no more lights!

After a reboot, you will need to open and close the app to activate the settings. Root required, and I'm not sure if this app can control the button brightness beyond always keeping the lights off. I'm happy just to have buttons without the lighting.
