Root [CDMA] Possible to downgrade bootloader?

First off, i'd like to say welcome as i'm a new member. Sorry if this is a noobish question, as I've only recently acquired my Evo 3d and it's my first Android phone. After doing research on this website, as well as others,I decided i'd root my Evo 3d. However, when i booted into bootloader to see which version I had for Revolutionary, it said my bootloader was version 1.50, and Revolutionary only gives the options for 1.3 and 1.4...is there any way to downgrade my version of Bootloader?

Thanks
DD

Eh...small problem. I went to backup my ROM using ROM Manager, and my phone restarted...however, now it's off and won't turn back on. When it's plugged in to my comp I get this message

"USB Device not recognized: One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it"

I cant even get Bootloader to come up. The only good news is that when it's plugged in, the red power light up top flashes once in a while.

How bad is this?

Have you tried a battery pull

Watch the video from this page: http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-3d-hacks/how-to-root-evo-3d-2-08-651-2-and-later-htc-unlock-method/: in it he mentions about installing a "HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe" driver. This driver is needed for the connection. Try installing that driver, there is a link to it on the page with the video.

It sounds quite bad.

As DonB said, try the battery pull. My gut tells me that it won't help.

Did you at any point flash a custom recovery? ROM Manager can do that for you. Did you have ROM manager flash clockworkmod before attempting to backup your ROM? If so, what version of clockworkmod did you flash?

I've always been hesitant to recommend ROM Manager to perform any root-related procedures unless the user knows how to do everything the fully manual way. I've seen this kind of scenario all too much during the Evo 4G's heyday.

Three things need to come together to end up with a bricked phone:

1) S-ON HBOOT (or unable to access HBOOT)
2) broken/missing custom recovery
3) unable to boot into Android

I think your phone satisfies all three conditions, so I do believe you are bricked. Try this one more time for good measure:

1) pull your battery
2) wait 30 seconds
3) put it back in and put the back cover back on, being careful not to press any buttons
4) hold the POWER and VOL-DOWN button for at least 10 seconds

If the white hboot screen doesn't appear, there's nothing left you can do to try to recover the phone.

Is there a project in the works to have the revolutionary root method work with 1.5 hboot version? I want to root asap but don't want the permanent watermark.

I updated my phone before I had done anything to it ie. s-off.

Thanks.
the news from IEF as i spoke with him a week or so ago is there will never be a revolutionary update to work with 1.5 hboot. however they are working on a method to possibly downgrade the bootloader to 1.4. that said, since htc is unlocking bootloaders it is a waste of their time to work on unlocking a device that HTC will unlock for you. They are focusing on devices where the vendor is not helping in development. hope this answers your question

and ps, dont ask for an eta or hold your breath

Question asked to Revo by Wake69 and here was there response below in the IRC

in the revolutionary irc channel 30 secs ago
[09:21] <wake69> will there be an update for the evo 3d 1.50 cdma bootloader?
[09:21] <@IEF> no
[09:21] <@IEF> there won't
[09:21] <wake69> thank you
[09:22] <wake69> i dont need it just a question
[09:22] <@IEF> we might figure out a way to downgrade to 1.40 at some point, which we will release then, but don't count on it

Unlocking your phone does not void your whole warranty. You had the chance to root via revolutionary. The only way this method void your warranty is if you brick your phone while rooting. This has been confirmed by a few sprint techs. If you want root then root either way gets the same basic things done. But don't blame htc for your reason to not root

Okay. So, if I am reading this correctly, and I think I am, I am safe if I gain S-OFF via Revolutionary prior to applying any updates to Android 2.3.4, which flashes HBOOT version 1.50.

So, under that scenario, if I updated to Android 2.3.4 and HBOOT version 1.50 was flashed, as long as I had S-OFF, I could downgrade back to a previous HBOOT. Am I correct in saying that?

you are correct. With Revolutionary S-OFF, you can flash any version HBOOT you want, even if you are on 1.5.

Is that what most people are doing? Are they just getting S-OFF via Revolutionary and then updating via the OTA to Android 2.3.4 and the maintenance OTA?

The alternative would be to get S-OFF and then flash a clean ROM with the enhancements added I guess. I guess once we have S-OFF, there is no way it can be removed by an update from HTC?

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that the S-OFF obtained by Revolutionary is not at the HBOOT level, so I think you can take an HBOOT update without losing S-OFF. I think something similar existed with the unrevoked 4ever S-OFF method. The S-OFF was at the radio level, not HBOOT, so you couldn't lose S-OFF with an HBOOT update.

I can't speak for "most people," but I personally downgraded all the way to the ENG HBOOT, and I plan to stick with it. So for this latest 2.3.4 OTA, I flashed most everything except the HBOOT. I don't see any reason to stay updated at the HBOOT level. There will never be functionality offered there that I want. ENG HBOOT has everything I'll ever need.

Although, if they come out with an HBOOT that fixes the horrific text scaling ugliness, I might consider taking it.
