Root Custom Kernels?

Ok, before I say anything. I realize this phone just came out and this stuff takes time... I know this! Just wondering... I'm not even going to pretend I know what I'm talking about but I read a few posts about something preventing the ability to use custom kernels. Does this mean it will never be possible to flash a custom kernel? Or just that we have to wait till someone much smarter than me unlocks this ability?

Again, I know they won't come tomorrow, just wondering if I will ever be able to flash a custom kernel.

If or when Moto unlocks the bootloader or some rock star developer gets into the bootloader, then we will be able to flash custom kernals.

So in other words, probably gonna be quite a while...

more like in other words probably not going to happen at all.

The DX has been out for over a year.....no one has cracked it yet.

Moto kind of sort of said they would change their policy a while back however that means nothing really. VZW has the final say so on when/if/which devices will have an unlocked bootloader or at the least a lockable unlockable bootloader.

Here comes my newbie question (not meaning to hijack you're thread) .... What's the difference between a ROM (like right note for instance "unleashed") and a custom kernel?

ROM is essentially the operation system... IE Windows, Vista, 7, XP

The kernel is essentially the middle man that deals with data between the hardware to the software.

To put in simple terms...
