Right, lets get the ball rolling because this thread was bound to be started sooner or later.

Will we get ICS on our DHDs? When will we get it?

Press release from HTC didn't sound so great for "older" phones in general, but DHD while no longer king is still a powerful peice of hardware.

Let the rumour mill begin.....!

The phone is powerful enough but this iteration has included a fair few features that were on the sense UI. Its almost like they grabbed a launcher when i see it. I was comparing it to GO launcher since that's what i use and there are similarities. Not going to know for sure because i haven't played with it yet.

Lets just say i will expect it to come to this phone. I would have thought that they simply create a luncher to compliment ICS and then remove certain features like NFC or the screenshot feature maybe? That way they have Sense UI with what we can consider full ICS.

I don't really understand ROMs and rooting but if we are forced to do it that way will that mean that i can still use a launcher over it? I guess it would since it does actually change the software rather then doing what a launcher does and covers it.

The only good thing is that the Sensation XL ROM (same screen resolution) was ported to the Desire HD/Inspire 4G successfully... so if worse comes to worse we can also get a port of the Sensation XL ROM and use it on our Desire HD (Of course with some help from genius hackers over at XDA!!)

HTC's latest statement:

“Since Google unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich earlier this week, HTC has been looking closely at the new OS’s features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. We’re a recognized industry leader in providing fast and consistent upgrades to our Android devices (see what Engadget had to say about our upgrades: Study: Verizon Wireless and HTC most eager to provide Android 2.2 updates -- Engadget), and Ice Cream Sandwich will be no different.

Upgrades require a careful balance of hardware and software to ensure the best possible performance and usability, so please stay tuned as we assess our product portfolio. Our goal is to upgrade as many HTC devices as possible and we’ll be sharing details on specific devices and timing in the coming weeks!”

HTC Posts Updates on Ice Cream Sandwich for their Phones

Long story short, we'll just have to wait and see.

Yep, not looking good for us. The optimist in me says we're just not in the first wave but will be upgraded. The realist in me says that HTC have dumped us.

HTC Ice Cream Sandwich update range revealed - SlashGear

HTC knows how excited our fans are to get their hands on Google’s latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, so we’re thrilled today to announce the first wave of HTC phones that will receive upgrades: We can confirm the brand new HTC Vivid is upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, Ice Cream Sandwich is coming in early 2012 to a variety of devices including the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation XL and HTC Sensation XE, as well as the HTC Rezound, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G and HTC Amaze 4G through close integration with our carrier partners. We’re continuing to assess our product portfolio, so stay tuned for more updates on device upgrades, timing and other details about HTC and Ice Cream Sandwich.

i expect nothing less from HTC, useless post sale service.

Oh well, Motorola RAZR or iPhone 4S it is then...

I'm no fan of HTC, but in all fairness to them they're not the worst
when it comes to upgrading existing handsets. In fact Motorola
are one of the worst.

But, that said, my next phone will be a plain Nexus phone. At
least one middle-man will have been cut-out of the loop.

I know they took ages to decide on whether the original Desire was going to get Gingerbread so probably the same thing here. Why i don't know since the hardware on this phone is top notch. The only thing it doesn't have is a dual core processor compared to the top phones, still very similar Ghz/Ram etc.

If we not get it then rooting will be it for me. Finally a proper reason to root for me.

There is absolutely no reason why the DHD couldn't handle ICS. Granted, it is almost a year old, but its specs are still really competitive with the phones they have announced ICS for.

I really hate to say it, but I really doubt I will be getting another HTC when my contract is up. Far too many phones released in such a short time scale, resulting in poor after sales support and service. Are you listening HTC? No, thought not.

I swore I wouldn't go back to Samsung after they royally f****d up the support with the Galaxy Portal/Spica (my first foray into Android) but their support and development of their newer Galaxy range has been top notch. I'll have to see what they can offer in 12 months time.

The issue lies with Sense in that it's massive and bloaty. A device with similar spec (The Nexus S for example) running Vanilla Android will run it with no issues, but Sense adds so much to Android (The CM7 download is 80ishMB, whilst a Sense based ROM is circa 300MB) I bet it that will scupper any chance of an official release because it wouldn't run as smooth as they'd like.

We'll see though, I'd like to be proved wrong and see an official release.

True, but I'm tempted to say its HTCs implementation of Sense which is bloaty. The dev ROMs seem to be much more fluid!!

To be honest, I like Sense... as long as we have custom roms I am happy :D

Also, HTC probably the best in updating their phones, the rest are even slower... HTC has a good record..

I hope that now ICS is refine graphically, HTC does not have to tinkle around too much, i.e. the home screen now is pretty good.. they will probably just add a rosie on it and that's pretty much it.

The source code was released this week for ICS, I believe, so expect a decent ROM ready within a month. Although I'd be gutted without Sense. It feels so brilliant compared to other launchers.

I do expect a revamp of Sense 4.0. ICS user interface is so polished now that I don't think HTC will customise it too much (hoping). But I guess we wait and see what HTC has install... Might just flash a generic AOSP ROM instead.. LOL
